In this video, Dr. David talks about the idea of resting and avoiding movement when you have back pain.

This usually comes from the belief that we need to “protect the spine.”

But if you avoid bending and lifting forever…you never get better at it.

The body will always see that movement as a weak spot.

At AMP, we load with intention – meaning we don’t just send you to the gym to do random exercises or push through heavy weight.

Loading with intention means: we start small, we meet you where you are, and we rebuild on the exact movements that bother you

If bending over hurts, we’re not putting 50 pounds in your hands and telling you to do reps.

But if we never load, if we only rest and avoid, that bridge to real-life movement never gets built.

So maybe we start with bending just a little… holding five pounds. Then five becomes ten.

A small bend becomes a deeper bend. And before you know it, you’re picking something heavy up from the floor without pain.

That’s what loading with intention looks like – and it’s how real progress happens.

In this video, Dr. David talks about the “Passive Band-Aid” approach.

Heat, ice, ultrasound, massage, cupping, dry needling, decompression…

They’re all passive.

And they’re not bad – they can feel good and offer temporary relief.

But just like a Band-Aid covers a wound, they don’t create the deeper healing that needs to happen.

If passive treatments aren’t solving the problem, what you likely need is an active rebuild.

Most people we see are active, and their pain shows up during the things they want to do.

So yes, the passive Band-Aid might help at rest…
but as soon as you go back to lifting or running, the pain returns.

Why?

Because there’s no bridge between that relief and the real-life activity that triggers the pain.

That’s why the AMP approach focuses on an active rebuild, not quick fixes.

If you’re tired of temporary relief and want to return to your activity without pain, send us a DM saying “BACK”

Dr. David explains that MRIs and x-rays are helpful, but they’re not the whole story when it comes to low back pain.

Imaging gives useful information and helps guide decisions, but it doesn’t mean you’re “stuck” or destined for lifelong pain.

When you look at the data on the board, it’s pretty surprising:

👉30% of 20-year-olds have disc bulges with zero pain
👉 Many people have degeneration, protrusions, or arthritis, and feel completely fine

And here’s the encouraging part:

👉 About one-third of disc bulges heal on their own
👉 The rest often stay the same – yet people still return to full, active lives
👉 You don’t need a “perfect” MRI to feel better

Some people feel frustrated hearing this (“Why does someone else have a bulge with no pain?”), but there’s hope in it:

Your MRI doesn’t determine your future.

You can get stronger, move better, and get back to what matters – even if the imaging doesn’t change.

Something Dr. David hears this all the time: Someone gets an MRI or x-ray and assumes the finding on the image is the exact reason they’re in pain.

They’ll say:

“This disc degeneration is why I hurt.”
“This herniated disk must be the problem.”
“If I fix this, the pain will go away.”

It seems logical – but it’s not always how the body works.

There are people with perfectly clean MRIs who have severe pain…and people with plenty of MRI findings who feel no pain at all.

In the video, Dr. David shows data from asymptomatic people (no consistent low back pain) ages ranging from 20 to 50.

All of these individuals had findings on their imaging, without chronic back pain.

So what does that mean?

👉 MRI findings are common
👉 They don’t automatically explain pain or predict your future
👉 Your MRI is helpful information, but it’s not the whole story.

A common misconception about low back pain is the idea that lifting with your back is dangerous.

Many of us were taught there’s only one “correct” way to lift:
“Lift with your legs, not your back.”
“Keep your back straight.”
“Never bend your spine.”

But the truth is… it highly depends.

We all have different body shapes and proportions, which means we naturally lift differently.

Lifting is individual, and the best technique is the one that feels safe and efficient for your body.

And in real life? Perfect form doesn’t exist.

If you’ve ever picked up a squirmy kid, a pet, or anything awkward, you know there’s no single lifting style that works every time.

Instead of avoiding your back, it’s far more helpful to train your back for all the different movements life throws at you.

A strong back is one that’s practiced bending, lifting, and moving in many ways – not one that avoids them.

If you want to feel more confident lifting and moving with low back pain, send us a DM with “BACK” and let’s talk!
