Family gatherings can be filled with love — and sometimes, with conversations that feel difficult or unhelpful. 🦃💬

If you’re in recovery, you deserve to enjoy your time around the Thanksgiving table. Here are a few tips that our team shares with clients and families each year:

🍽️ Plan support ahead: Talk with your therapist, dietitian, or loved one about what you might need, from meal support to after-dinner check-ins.
💬 Prepare responses: Keep a few go-to phrases ready for diet or body talk, like “I’m focusing on my recovery,” or “I’d love to talk about something else.”
🕯️ Shift the focus: Ask others about their favorite holiday memories, music, or gratitude moments to redirect the conversation.

Most importantly, remember that you don’t have to engage in every discussion. Taking care of yourself is part of the celebration.

The holidays can be joyful, but for those in recovery, they can also bring anxiety, pressure, and unexpected triggers. 💛

To kick off our Thanksgiving prep series, let's focus on boundaries — a crucial part of protecting your peace and supporting recovery. Setting them isn’t selfish; it’s a way to stay grounded in your healing.

Here are a few ways to practice boundaries this season:

1️⃣ Decide ahead of time what events or conversations feel supportive and which ones don’t.
2️⃣ Use clear language like, “I’d rather not talk about food right now,” or “Let’s focus on what we’re grateful for instead.”
3️⃣ Build in recovery anchors: Step outside for a breath, check in with your support person, or journal for five minutes.

Boundaries create space for safety, not separation. This Thanksgiving, allow yourself to participate in ways that honor your needs and well-being. 🍁

We’re always grateful for the kind words shared by the clinicians and providers who visit Hidden River. 🌿

Recently, one of our referring providers reflected on their experience touring our campus and meeting our team, noting the peaceful environment, compassionate staff, and the truly holistic nature of our care. Hearing this feedback reinforces what we strive for every day: to create a setting where healing feels possible from the moment someone walks through our doors.

💙 To all of our partners and professionals who entrust their patients to us — thank you for recognizing the heart behind Hidden River Healing.
