The fight or flight nature of horses predisposes them to beautifully expose our hidden emotions. To lead a 1,200-pound animal, your internal feelings must match your external actions. If you try to give direction while feeling unsure or afraid, a horse usually won't follow. Conversely, if you are present, confident, and gently assertive, they fall into their roles as partners and cherished companions. In this way, horses help us learn how to align our emotional states with our behaviors.
