Great tips for any challenging event, but especially as we enter the holiday season!

I recognize that the holiday season isn’t happy and healthy for all.

If the holidays are leaving you feeling a way, here are some of my top tips for bringing awareness to yourself and feelings this holiday season.

(Note: I am not a therapist or counselor. These are tips that have worked for me that I want to share to provide inspiration or awareness this holiday season.)

1. Create an exit strategy. If you’re finding yourself feeling overwhelmed or surrounded by individuals you don’t want to spend time with, or even if you just need a moment to yourself — create an exit opportunity for yourself before a gathering or event.

My favorite? I’ll use an animal as an excuse to leave (have to let the dog outside!).

The best strategy is probably to be truthful, but sometimes that is hard.

2. Take a walk. Moving your body in some way can lift your energy and make you feel better. Add fresh air and sunshine and bam! it helps a little.

3. Drink water. When our routine changes, sometimes we forget basic things like drinking enough water. If you find yourself feeling lethargic or restless or getting a headache, water might help! I try to always bring a giant water bottle with me whenever I go as a reminder.

4. Find a quiet retreat. For me, I almost always locate a furry animal in another house, find a quiet room, or go outside. Take a few minutes for yourself and then return to the gathering.

5. Say no. If you really are not feeling in the mood for a gathering, don’t go. It won’t be the end of the world to skip it. Sure, others may feel bummed or let down, but you have to be in charge of YOU.

🙏 Be well!

When it comes to taking care of yourself, it’s important to remember that it’s perfectly okay to feel however you’re feeling.
