A few of our young parent providers have recently been sharing lice stories at their kids’ school. Here is what they want you to know:

❄️ Winter isn’t just cold and flu season… it’s also peak head lice season. Hats, hoods, earmuffs and shared spaces at school, make for the perfect travel plan for head lice.

🧐 Signs to watch for
- Intense scalp itching
- Red, irritated scalp from scratching
- Crawling sensation on the scalp
- Tiny lice (they look like sesame seeds) or yellow-brown eggs attached to hair

🧴 Basic treatment combination
- 1% permethrin OTC cream rinse (Nix) is the best one. Treatment usually needs to be repeated in 7 days.
- Fine-tooth lice comb to remove dead lice and nits from wet hair once a day for at least 3 weeks.

✅Additional important steps
- Check anyone who has been in close contact with the child and treat if you see lice or nits.
- Wash sheets, pillowcases, clothes, blankets, hats, stuffed animals & pillows in hot water.
- Dry items on high heat for 20–30 minutes.
- Put ‘unwashables’ in hot dryer for 30 minutes or seal in plastic bags for 2- 3 weeks.

🚨 Still itchy

As a mom of a teenage girl and a Physician Assistant at our practice, Kelly Buchanan knows firsthand how acne can impact confidence and social interactions as kids enter adolescence. Left unaddressed, it can even lead to lasting scars. The good news she says is that teen acne is very treatable.

A few key truths she’d like you to know:
☑️ Over-washing can make acne worse
☑️ Most over-the-counter treatments take 6-8 weeks to show results
☑️ Being consistent and patient is key
☑️ Preventing breakouts is more effective than spot-treating
☑️ Picking pimples increases the risk of scarring

🧴 What over-the-counter helps:
☑️ Gentle washing with a medicated acne cleanser containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide
☑️ Applying a benzoyl peroxide cream or gel daily as an alternative to medicated washes
☑️ Using a gentle non-comedogenic and oil-free moisturizers in case of dryness on top of the medication

When over-the-counter options aren’t enough, prescription treatments can make a big difference.

Acne can be frustrating, but with the right plan and consistency, clear skin is achievable. If your teen is struggling, one of our providers can help guide them.
