Avant Dentistry provides individualized dental care to residents living in Chevy Chase, MD, and its surrounding communities. Led by Dr. Annie Yu, a dentist in Chevy Chase, she oversees a team of professionals who are committed to focusing on you, the patient. With more than 15 years of experience working in the field, Dr. Yu cannot narrow down her favorite thing about her job. The opportunity to transform smiles, boost patient confidence, and build relationships with those who entrust her with their oral health are all enjoyable aspects of her day-to-day reality. With much enthusiasm and positivity, Dr. Yu strives to change the way patients view the dentist’s office. Coming from a long line of family physicians, she has always been drawn to the medical field. Only until she shadowed a dentist did she realize it was the perfect profession for her. Her shy demeanor and timidness were quickly replaced with enthusiasm once the dentist fixed her tooth with bonding. At that moment, Dr. Yu realized she wanted to provide the same type of help. Dr. Yu attended The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 2006, earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree before pursuing a postgraduate residency program at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. During this time, she trained with leading dental practitioners, including Dr. Peter Dawson of the Dawson Academy. She also worked closely with clinicians at the Pankey Institute. Maintaining high standards for herself, she frequently pursues continuing education courses and training to refine her skills and expand her knowledge. She wants to stay on top of the latest changes and advancements in cutting-edge dentistry. As a result, she is a scholar of SPEAR Education, the Pankey Institute, Dawson Academy, Seattle Study Club, and the Pikos Implants Institute. Dr. Yu was awarded a Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) in 2013 and a Mastership (MAGD) in 2020. Less than 2% of all general dentists have obtained these recognitions. She also has training in sleep and airway treatment through the Spear Institute, The Breathe Institute, and Sleep Group Solutions. Also, she is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the Maryland State Dental Association, and the Academy of General Dentistry. Providing comprehensive services that are designed to safeguard your health and enhance your smile, we offer a five-star experience that will change the way you view visiting the dentist. If you’re looking for an affordable and friendly dental office that is committed to you and your oral health, stop by and see us today. We look forward to meeting you!

TRUTH! Would you believe that these bacteria are often found in as little as 1-3mm gum pockets (which are typically considered "healthy gums")?!?! We offer saliva testing to confirm the presence of such bacteria! Call 240-743-4421 to ask us about it!

ORAL BACTERIA CAN TRAVEL TO THE HEART 🫀

Scientists have discovered something shocking — bacteria commonly found in dental plaque have been detected inside the arteries and even heart tissue of patients who suffered heart attacks.

How does this happen?
When gums are inflamed or diseased, bacteria can slip into the bloodstream through tiny breaks in gum tissue. Once in circulation, they may contribute to inflammation in blood vessels, accelerating cardiovascular damage.

This doesn’t mean oral bacteria directly cause heart disease, but their presence shows how strongly the mouth and heart are connected. Ignoring gum health could silently fuel risks far beyond the mouth.

Current research suggests that keeping gums healthy through regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings isn’t just about saving teeth — it could also help protect the heart.
