Keefe Memorial Health Service District

Keefe Memorial Health Service District History Keefe Memorial Hospital
In 1931 in an old boarding house (on what is now Main Street) Dr. Leonard N. In 1947 this small hospital became the St.

Meyers opened the first small hospital in Cheyenne Wells to serve the people of Cheyenne County and the surrounding area. Joseph Hospital of the Plains when the Sisters of St. Joseph Third Order of St. Francis (TSOF) from Bartlett, Illinois Province assumed ownership. In 1960 the booming medical needs of this deemed it necessary for a new facility. The Sisters of St. Joseph, a federal grant and a community fund campaign provided funding. In October 1962, the new St. Joseph Hospital of the Plains was opened and was formally dedicated in May 1963. This is still our current facility. Also in 1962, Dr. Jerome Keefe built a new clinic just south of the hospital. The additional and location of the clinic helped facilitate better utilization for outpatient services and also ensured the availability of a doctor just steps away! Expanding Our Services
The need for more space and more services arose once again in 1974. A building fund was raised and a new addition was started in the summer of 1975. Upon completion services expanded included a patient care area, the solarium and a larger laboratory area. This new addition was dedicated on April 25, 1976. Joseph (TOSJ) from 1947 to December 1987 governed this hospital, when the sisters generously gifted the facility to the county and it became Cheyenne County Hospital. In 1992 the hospital received a small facelift making its internal appearance beautiful, warm and caring. In 2004, the heating and air conditioning system was replaced making for a much more efficient comfortable building. A New Name
In May of 1993, Cheyenne County Hospital was renamed to Keefe Memorial Hospital in recognition of Dr. Jerome Keefe who has dedicated nearly half a century to the delivery of health care to the people of Cheyenne County and the surrounding area.

🥬 It’s National Spinach Day! 🥬

Looking for a simple way to boost your nutrition? Spinach is packed with fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants that support both heart health and digestive health.

During National Nutrition Month, adding leafy greens like spinach to your meals is an easy step toward better overall wellness. Foods high in fiber may also help support colon health and play a role in colorectal cancer prevention.

Easy ways to add spinach to your day:
✔ Toss it into a salad
✔ Blend it into a smoothie
✔ Add it to eggs or omelets
✔ Stir it into soups or pasta dishes

Small choices can make a big impact on your health — and today is a great day to start! 💚

🔷 Preventive Care Starts with Your Annual Check-Up

Your annual check-up is more than just a routine appointment — it’s one of the most important steps you can take to protect your long-term health. These visits allow providers to monitor changes, address concerns early, and recommend appropriate screenings based on your age, history, and risk factors.

Annual exams often include:
✔ Blood pressure checks
✔ Preventive screenings
✔ Routine lab work
✔ Medication review
✔ Discussion of lifestyle and wellness goals

Regular visits can help identify conditions like heart disease, diabetes, thyroid concerns, and colorectal cancer in earlier, more manageable stages — often before symptoms appear.

In rural communities, staying proactive with preventive care helps keep you healthy and reduces the need for more complex care later. A simple appointment today can make a meaningful difference tomorrow.

If it’s been a while since your last check-up, consider this your reminder to get back on the schedule. Your health is worth it. 💙

To book a visit you will need to call the location where you would like to be seen. To contact us with regard to something else please fill out the form below.

🌷 Hello, Spring! 🌷

The first day of spring is finally here—and it’s the perfect time to step outside, soak up some fresh air, and get moving again.

After a long winter, even small changes can make a big impact on your health. A short walk, time in the sunshine, or getting back into outdoor activities can help boost your mood, improve heart health, and increase your overall energy.

As we continue through National Nutrition Month, remember that staying active is just as important as making healthy food choices. Together, they play a key role in supporting your overall wellness.

Let this season be your fresh start. 🌿

Medication safety starts at home.

During National Poison Prevention Week, we’re reminding our community that simple precautions can make a big difference. Safe storage of medications, proper labeling, and keeping potentially harmful substances out of reach of children are key steps in preventing accidental poisonings.

It’s also important to be mindful of household cleaners, chemicals, and even over-the-counter medications — all of which should be stored securely and used as directed.

If you ever have questions or concerns about a possible poisoning, help is available 24/7 through the Poison Control Hotline at 1-800-222-1222. This free, confidential service connects you directly with experts who can guide you on what to do next.

When in doubt, don’t wait — make the call.

☘️ Happy St. Patrick’s Day from KMH! ☘️

Feeling lucky today? One of the best ways to bring a little “green” into your celebration is through healthy choices that support your well-being.

This St. Patrick’s Day, consider adding more heart-healthy greens to your plate — like spinach, broccoli, and leafy salads. These foods are rich in nutrients and fiber, helping support both heart health and colon health.

During National Nutrition Month, it’s a great reminder that small, intentional choices can make a big impact on your long-term health.

A little green can go a long way. 💚
