PCOS is so much more than “cysts on the ovaries.” And…. Spoiler alert…. Frequently does not present with ovarian cysts.
Polycystic O***y Syndrome is a metabolic and endocrine condition, and many women with PCOS don’t actually have ovarian cysts. You can even have regular or “normal” menstrual cycles and still meet the criteria for diagnosis.
PCOS can present in many different ways. Common symptoms include:
• Fatigue
• Difficulty losing weight
• Acne
• Facial hair or excess hair growth
• Irregular cycles or missing periods
• Infertility
• High Cholesterol
A key hormonal indicator in many patients is androgen excess, which can contribute to symptoms like acne, facial hair, scalp hair thinning, and metabolic dysfunction.
At its core, PCOS often involves a combination of insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction, androgen excess, and hormone imbalance, particularly issues with progesterone and estradiol balance.
Because PCOS shows up differently for everyone, diagnosis and treatment should never be rushed or one-size-fits-all.
That’s exactly why I do things differently.
