As a small business owner here in Wyoming, this really hits home. I own Knott Your Average Massage LLC in Cheyenne, and I operate with no grants or subsidies – just my own savings and a lot of long days.
I keep my massage licenses (2) current, carry insurance (2), maintain my rental space, pass health inspections(2), file my taxes, and pay every business expense out of pocket every year/month while trying to support my family. Doing things the right way isn’t easy, but my clients’ safety and trust matter to me.
There is also a serious safety side to this. When people practice massage without proper licensing and education in anatomy, physiology, contraindications, and disease prevention, they can actually harm someone – making injuries worse, spreading illness, or in extreme cases even causing life‑threatening complications. Professional training and regulation exist for a reason: to protect the public.
So when tax dollars go to big “economic development” efforts that don’t show real results, it’s hard not to wonder what could change if more of that focus went to enforcing existing standards and easing the burden on legitimately licensed, compliant small businesses that are already doing the work. Choosing trained, licensed professionals like me truly makes a difference.
