You know you’re not feeling well, but what is it? Cody Regional Health has tips so you can tell the difference between a cold, the flu, or something more serious.
🤧 Is it a cold, the flu, or COVID-19? Here’s how to tell.
During the winter months, respiratory illnesses are everywhere — and many of them share the same symptoms. Sore throat, cough, fatigue, and body aches can make it hard to know what you’re dealing with. Here’s a helpful breakdown:
🦠 COVID-19
Symptoms may include:
• Fever or chills
• Cough or shortness of breath
• Fatigue, body aches, headache
• New loss of taste or smell
• Sore throat, congestion, nausea, or diarrhea
Symptoms usually appear 2–14 days after exposure and can last around two weeks, sometimes longer.
🤒 Influenza (Flu)
Symptoms are similar to COVID-19 but usually:
• Come on quickly (1–4 days after exposure)
• Last 3–7 days, though fatigue may linger
• Typically do not include loss of taste or smell
😷 The Common Cold
Usually milder and includes:
• Sneezing, runny or stuffy nose
• Sore throat, cough
• Mild fatigue or fever
Cold symptoms often appear 1–3 days after exposure and most people recover within 3–10 days.
⚠️ When to seek emergency care
Get immediate help if you or a loved one experiences:
• Trouble breathing
• Chest pain or pressure
• New confusion
• Inability to stay awake
• Pale, gray, or bluish skin, lips, or nail beds
💡 If you’re not sure what’s making you sick, don’t guess.
Call your healthcare provider instead of showing up unannounced. Testing can often check for both flu and COVID-19 with one swab, helping guide the right care.
💉 Now is also a great time to get your flu shot.
Vaccines don’t always prevent illness completely, but they do help reduce severity and protect those most vulnerable in our community.
If you’re feeling unwell:
• Stay home
• Practice good hand hygiene
• Mask if needed
• Reach out to your provider for guidance
At Cody Regional Health, our care is personal — and we’re here to help you stay informed, safe, and well this season. 💙
