Accessible travel organization Wheel the World recently named Oregon as the first state to be “Accessibility Verified.” Power wheelchair user and longtime Oregon resident Ian Ruder decided to investigate what that means for disabled travelers.

He found that Travel Oregon hired Wheel the World to send evaluators to over 750 destinations in Oregon to measure and document all the relevant accessibility features — not just mobility, but also visual, hearing and cognitive features. The state has also invested $8 million in accessibility grants over the last two years.

“It might be Mobi-mats here, it might be an enhanced trail here, but there has been a lot of [accessible] infrastructure invested in Oregon in the last two years,” says Kevin Wright, Travel Oregon’s VP of brand stewardship. “I don’t know of any other state that’s invested that much money … There’s so much happening that there’s a lot more for people to explore that maybe they couldn’t in the past.”

Winter is coming — here are 5 simple things you can do to keep your wheelchair-accessible van running safely all season:

1️⃣ Keep your ramp + door tracks clean
Salt, sand, and snow can cause ramps to stick. A quick wipe-down once a week helps a lot.

2️⃣ Check your battery + run the van often
Cold weather weakens batteries faster. Start the van every few days if you’re not driving much.

3️⃣ Inspect your tires
Make sure tread is good and your tire pressure is correct — especially with the colder temperatures.

4️⃣ Lubricate moving parts lightly
A small amount of silicone spray on ramp hinges and latches helps everything move smoothly in the cold.

5️⃣ Keep an emergency kit in the van
Blanket, ice scraper, gloves, small shovel, phone charger, and extra meds if needed.
