🩺 What Is a Cardiac CT Calcium Score?

A cardiac CT calcium score is a quick, non-invasive scan that checks for calcium buildup in the arteries of the heart — an early indicator of heart disease.

This test helps providers make informed decisions before symptoms appear. It’s one more way expert imaging supports proactive, personalized care.

“I will forever be telling people how important it is to get your mammogram every year.”

Those are the words of Heather Ashby, who nearly skipped her screening — until a mobile mammography unit at her workplace made it easy to keep her appointment. Because she went, her early-stage breast cancer was detected just days before a planned vacation, and she was able to get prompt follow-up care and a lumpectomy. Today she has an excellent prognosis, and she says the screening quite literally saved her life.

Heather’s experience is a powerful reminder that preventive imaging can make all the difference. When cancer or other conditions are found early, treatment is usually less complex, recovery is quicker, and the financial impact — from medical bills to time away from work or family — is often much smaller.

Don’t wait for symptoms. Regular screenings help catch issues when they are still most treatable, helping you stay healthier longer — and helping avoid the emotional and financial burden that can come with late-stage disease.

Did you make a New Year's Resolution? If it centered around health or money, keep reading!

Preventive screenings aren’t just a health decision — they’re a financial one.

▪ When conditions are found early, care is often simpler, less invasive, and far less disruptive to daily life and finances. 💰👍💚
▪ When they are found later, treatment can be longer, more complex, and significantly more costly. 💸👎💔

Screening mammograms, baseline bone density scans, and heart calcium scoring CT help identify risk early — before emergencies, fractures, or advanced disease drive unexpected medical bills and time away from work.

Preventive screenings today will help with both health and financial goals this year!

💡 Did you know?

Preventive imaging helps tell your health story over time. These data points are critical to assess your health when it might matter most!

Screening exams like mammograms, bone density scans, and heart calcium scoring CT give providers an important starting point — a BASELINE snapshot of your health today.

That baseline allows radiologists and your care team to:
1) Understand what’s normal for you
2) Spot small changes during future exams
3) Identify concerns earlier, often before symptoms appear

When you return for follow-up imaging, those earlier results matter. Comparing today’s images to prior exams helps radiologists see subtle differences that might otherwise be missed and determine whether something is stable, improving, or needs closer attention.

This step-by-step approach means care is based on patterns and trends — not just a single moment in time — helping guide more informed, personalized decisions for your health.

What does that mean for you? Don't wait till you notice symptoms. Create a health regimen that allows for preventative care. We're here to support you. Call us if you have questions!

Heart calcium scoring CT helps identify cardiovascular risk early.

A heart calcium scan is a quick, non-invasive CT exam that measures calcium buildup (plaque) in the coronary arteries. This information helps assess your risk for heart disease — often before symptoms occur.

The American Heart Association recognizes coronary artery calcium scoring as a valuable tool for refining cardiovascular risk and guiding preventive care for certain patients.

Knowing your heart health today can help protect your health for the future.

Baseline bone density scans help protect long-term health and mobility.

A bone density test (DEXA scan) measures the strength of your bones and can identify early signs of osteoporosis — often before a fracture occurs.

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, early screening is essential for preventing bone loss and reducing the risk of future fractures, especially for women age 65+ and men age 70+ (or younger adults with risk factors).

A quick, painless scan today can help preserve bone health for years to come.

Screening mammograms are a critical step in protecting women’s health.

A mammogram can detect breast cancer early — often before symptoms appear — when treatment is most effective and outcomes are significantly better.

According to the American Cancer Society, women who receive regular screening mammograms have a much higher chance of detecting breast cancer at an early, treatable stage.

Why screening matters:
• Early detection improves survival rates
• Identifies small cancers before they grow
• Helps guide timely, personalized care

If you are age 40 or older, talk with your provider about beginning routine screening.
