The smallest bones in the body, called the ossicles, have the sole responsibility of allowing us to hear. When sound enters the ear, those sound waves hit the ossicles and causes them to vibrate. As the shake, they carry the sound into the inner ear where it’s then sent up to the brain. The brain then interprets the sound which allows us to distinguish what it is. This may sound like a simple concept but it’s actually complicated and involves much more from other structures.

Red blood cells lack a nucleus and other organelles. This is a cool thing because with these organelles missing, the red blood has plenty of room to carry oxygen and squeeze through small spaces. Yet, it’s also interesting because as the cell ages, it cannot repair itself. When blood cells circulate inside the body, the cells encounter ongoing physical and chemical stress. And when membranes begin to show signs of deterioration, they are extracted from the bloodstream and replaced; which is about every 120 days.

The cornea is a transparent, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of your eye. Interestingly, the cornea obtains its nutrients and oxygen solely through diffusion, without relying on blood. The primary function of the cornea is straightforward yet crucial: it permits light to enter your eye so you can see clearly. If it contained blood vessels, your sight would be blurry, distorted, or partially obstructed.
