The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps keep families safe and healthy through initiatives that assist families with energy costs. LIHEAP provides federally funded assistance to reduce the costs associated with home energy bills, energy crises, weatherization, and minor energy-related home repairs.

LIHEAP can help you stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer through programs that reduce the risk of health and safety problems that arise from unsafe heating and cooling situations and practices.

Are you being waitlisted for senior communities?
When you make a deposit on senior housing, you may be placed on a “wait list” for one of the other available units. This can be frustrating if you’ve already been told that your unit will not be ready for at least another two or three years, but it’s important to remember that those are rough estimates, and the actual move-in date could be much sooner than that. The marketing director will go down the list and call the individuals it is up to the senior to accept or refuse the offer of moving in at that time. If you accept the process will begin and if you refuse your name will remain on the list and when another opening is available they will call you.

Aging in Place or Assisted Living?
It may surprise you that the overall cost of assisted living in the United States is less than living at home with in-home care. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey, the median yearly cost of in-home care in 2021 was $59,488 for homemaker services and $61,776 for a home health aide. The median cost for assisted living care came in at $54,000 annually, so moving into an assisted living community can yield over $7,000 in savings!

Social security for 2023 will be adjusted to 8.7%. This will be the fourth highest bump of all time.

What is in store for 2023 senior housing?
Staffing shortages seem to still be a problem, many senior living communities have had to hire third-party staff and agencies. This allow the workers to be more flexible and to keep the seniors happy and the communities running smoothly. Margins for senior companies have been running tighter given that inflation is so high, most communities will bump up their prices. The average annual increase runs 3% to 5%, this year it looks like 6% to 10% in some senior communities.

How to talk to my parents about moving to a senior living community?

Ask and answer these questions:
Do they have trouble remembering things?
Can they move around and walk independently?
Do they need help with basic hygiene such as bathing or getting dressed?
Do they need transportation to doctor’s appointments?
Do they need medical care or have to have prescription medication?
Are they able to afford assisted living options?
