Seriously! 🤪

I could go on and on. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE doctors. Urologists are GREAT at getting kidney stones out of you. But, most aren't trained (very much, if at all) in kidney stone PREVENTION.

Doctor's also aren't DIETITIANS. We can't all be experts in everything. Doctors certainly can do many things I would NEVER as a dietitian. A dietitian is going to be the BEST person to help you know what changes to make and ACTUALLY MAKE THEM!

If I learned ANYTHING during my time at the University of Chicago Kidney Stone Prevention Program, it is that KIDNEY STONES ARE PREVENTABLE! No matter who you are, or why you are forming kidney stones, there are things you can do to reduce the risk of making more - and in many cases, prevent them altogether!

Bananas might just be the EASIEST and tastiest snack on the planet.

Unfortunately, they are so often a "no-no" in kidney nutrition. This is because bananas are notoriously high in potassium. BUT, potassium from fruits and veggies can actually be a GOOD thing for kidney health for most people!

🍌 Higher potassium diets can help control blood pressure
🍌 Potassium is a VERY good thing for kidney stone prevention
🍌 Bananas are a great source of soluble fiber, a type of fiber that is hard to find!

Remember, nearly ALL foods have some potassium in them. It is all about learning how to build healthy meal patterns that are right for you!

Thank you for being so open about your recent diagnosis of CKD. One in 7 Americans has kidney disease, and 1 in 3 is at risk. It really is an under appreciated topic!

I hear DAILY from people at the END OF THEIR ROPE because they've been on a low oxalate diet for YEARS - yet KEEP GETTING KIDNEY STONES. Check out my top 8 reasons why!

You've been diligently following a low oxalate diet and you keep getting stones. How can this be? It is a terrible place to be in: thinking you are doing everything "right" and still getting stone

Are you on the ⬅️ or ➡️ side of this post?

Only about 10% of people fall onto the right side and get the best, personalized kidney stone prevention plan possible.

YOU DESERVE BETTER! 💙

Without the results of that 24-hour urine test, there is NO WAY to know what is actually causing your stones. Any nutrition recommendations are just a GUESS. You could be spinning your wheels trying to make diet changes (changes are, avoiding oxalate), that aren't even going to MATTER!

My goal is for EVERYONE with kidney stones to get personalized kidney stone nutrition advice. Lofty goal, I know - but a girl can dream, right!? 🌈

1) Only 20% of people EVER have high urine oxalate. Even if you make calcium oxalate stones, chances are your urine oxalate isn’t high.

2) Low oxalate diets cut out the EXACT foods that are highest in things that make it harder for calcium oxalate stones to form (we call them “inhibitors” in the stone research world). This is likely why low oxalate diets have NEVER been (even) associated with a lower risk of kidney stones.

3) The oxalate in your diet only accounts for a TINY percentage of the oxalate in your urine. Your LIVER makes oxalate every single day, and that oxalate makes up a larger percentage of your urine oxalate. This is how urine oxalate can go UP on a fully oxalate free diet.

4) Low oxalate diets make is SUPER hard to get in enough FIBER, which is critical for a healthy gut microbiome- which can literally EAT UP the oxalate in the healthy higher oxalate foods you eat.

➡️ BOTTOM LINE: Oxalate MATTERS, but taking oxalate out of your diet isn’t the answer. Focusing on changing how your body processes that oxalate makes WAY more sense. Being sure to get in enough calcium and supporting a healthy gut microbiome are MUCH more effective and healthy ways to manage oxalate vs a low oxalate diet.

At the end of the day, EVERYONE is making kidney stones for ALL sorts of different reasons. High urine oxalate isn’t the issue for most people!
