"Mary Keane Epilepsy Research at Rush University" This page is in memory of Mary Caitlin D. Keane 01/13/1992 to 04/05/2011. Also for the estimated 125,000 people that die from epilepsy worldwide. RIP Mary Keane.

On April 5th 2011, loving daughter, sister, grandaughter, niece, and friend, Mary Keane passed away, shortly after her 19th birthday. The cause - epilepsy. This SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED:( While dramatic strides have been made in epilepsy research, there is much work to continue. This page is in honor of Mary's life. She was discriminated against by many, especially in her teenage years. Living with epilepsy is more difficult than anyone could ever imagine, but Mary handled it with grace. She never said "no" to a new treatment. She was happy with any help she could receive. Gone but never forgotten. According to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, about the same number of people die from seizures as die from breast cancer. More than 20 percent of the 200,000 new cases diagnosed each year are children under the age of 15 and every TWO minutes someone is diagnosed with epilepsy in the USA. In 70% of the cases diagnosed, no known cause is found. The mortality rate is 2 to 3 times higher among people with epilepsy and and the risk of sudden death is 24 times greater. Research must continue and together we can find a cure.
