From swelling to control — this is what proper lymphedema management looks like

Photo 1: The acute phase, where multilayer bandaging is applied to help reduce swelling and support lymphatic drainage.

Photo 3: The maintenance phase, where continued compression management thru Velcro wraps or stockings, or socks help preserve results and prevent fluid buildup.

Note: One of the most common mistakes in managing lymphedema is the use of compression garment without reducing the limb. Proper fit, pressure, and type of garment are crucial for effective treatment and long-term management.

Accurate technique and consistency are key in achieving optimal outcomes.

When I started my company, I called several organizations if I could do an inservice to educate people on lifestyle modification, importance of physical activity in preventing and managing diabetes BUT I was really disheartened that most places will not allow me. But then I met Ann Teano and we clicked right away. She asked me if I could be the President of a Lions Club. I did not even know what it is. But I’m glad I did. It gave me the platform to impart knowledge to the community. I am very passionate about educating people on diabetes prevention and management, and mental health awareness.

Did you know that people with diabetes often have depression or anxiety???

So if you know anyone who is dealing with diabetes, pre-diabetes, send them my way. You can also be part of our Lions Club: Chicago Nurses for Diabetes Lions Club and be part of a movement. This Sunday, we are doing the Annual Walkathon to raise funds for diabetes management and mental health. It’s at Green Valley Forest Preserve in Naperville from 8-2pm. Registration is $30 per participant. It’s only 5k but it’s for a good cause. If you can’t make it in person, we also accept donations. PM or text me for details.

A 42 y/o male called to seek treatment for a deep wound on his left lower leg. He works as a construction worker and a tile dropped on his leg causing a deep cut. He went to urgent care but did not receive proper wound care. His wound became infected and was diagnosed with cellulitis. It did not help that he also was pre-diabetic.

I saw him and gave instructions to change lifestyle: diet high in protein, low carb, and no sodas/beer. After 3 weeks, he lost 23 lbs! I took care of his wound once a week and he was given instructions to do wound care. His wound got better in no time.

This may look disgusting to others but only wound practitioners would be excited to see this! The red, healthy, granulation tissue. The whitish color on the edges is from the Calmoseptine cream used to protect the periwound. After changing his lifestyle, he developed a newfound sense of wellness, he does not crave junk foods or beer. And now he’s going shopping for new clothes from size XL to Medium!

I love what I do!

An individual with bad veins don’t have to present with swelling to have cellulitis. At Engram Therapy and Wellness Clinic, our Certified Lymphedema Therapists will provide Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Compression Bandaging, Skin/Wound Care, and Decongestive Exercises to prevent complications such as wounds, difficulty breathing, or worse sepsis. Our therapists will also facilitate ordering your compression garments and pumps so you don’t have to worry about anything!

This week’s featured case study involves a 70+ y/o female patient who has lymphedema of the trunk and both legs which resulted to cellulitis and pressure injuries. Most patients don’t get diagnosed with lymphedema until they have wounds and they went to hospital because of an infection of the skin. This lady could not move around because her lymphedema made her arthritis even worse. Also, she had pressure sores on the back of her thighs from not being able to move. It’s a vicious cycle. Lymphedema PT can help a lot in healing the wounds, improve mobility, and prevent another hospitalization.
