Targeted shootings, mass shootings, su***de, and all other forms of gun violence are senseless acts of harm impacting our communities everyday. The publicity and attention these acts of violence feel unavoidable because they are unavoidable.

Gun violence impacts everyone who exists in a place where others have access to use a gun. The devastation our country continues to experience because of gun violence can feel overwhelming. We are sending peace and healing energy to all those feeling that grief.

We encourage all to take action by tending to your emotional needs, caring for others in your community hurting, and getting involved with gun reform! Check out to learn ways you can take action to reduce gun violence.

The violence and control being placed upon pregnant peoples' bodies is frightening and triggering space to be in. If you feel alone, lost, low, vulnerable, or scared; know that you are not alone.

We encourage all people affected by the recent overturn of Roe v. Wade to take time to reflect on how this is impacting your physical, emotional, and spiritual self. Take time to safely express your emotions. Lean into practices of care and restoration. Take action by learning more about the importance and impact of keeping abortions safe, legal, and accessible; donat and volunteer with abortion access and advocacy organizations; call your local government representatives! Check out for excellent resources to get started.

Do you need support processing and expressing your emotions about our current political climate? Schedule a free 20 minute consultation to see if art therapy or counseling can help you. Link in bio.

We had the privilege of hosting Black Alphabet in the studio recently for our first in-person workshop to explore creating meaningful, non-sexual relationships during the pandemic.

The creative process and art making are great ways to deepen our understanding, build self-awareness, and connect with others. Attendees created art in pairs while being given a range of communication barriers and again with no communication barriers. We reflected on how the process and the artwork created can hold parallels to connecting with others in our own communities.

We can't wait to have you back ! 🌈🎨

Hip Hip Hooray its Mental Health Awareness Month! 💚 🧠 ☮️

Sometimes our brains are so overwhelmed it's hard to articulate what we are feeling and what we need to feel focused, grounded, and at peace. That's why art therapists like to intentionally process emotions and thoughts through art making.

Making art not only helps calm our bodies and quiet our minds but also can help deepen our self-awareness and enhance our ability to communicate our feelings and needs.

Rainy Day Art Therapy can support your emotional processing, identification, and expression through traditional talk therapy and creative art therapy interventions. Interested in trying art therapy? We are currently accepting new clients! Head over to our website to schedule a free, 20 minute consultation to begin the journey of using the creative process to support your emotional health.

We recently led a workshop for SRAM employees highlighting the importance of taking breaks and how impactful making art can be as a form of restoration.

Using a guided art experience, we created a space to unplug, reconnect with one's creativity, and reflect on how the experience enhances work performance and strengthens one's sense of community with colleagues.
Thank you for having us ! 🚲 🎨🧠

Have you considered using art as a way to nurture your work performance?

We caught up with our clinician Edie to see what's been happening in her creative practice.

What's going on with your art practice?
E - I'm free hand embroidering visualizations of therapy terms. Eventually I want to turn each piece into a quilt to hang up in our studio. I've also been incorporating glitter glue into my illustrations a lot lately. I think it's my way of highlighting the bits of brightness that exist during this incredibly hard time we are living in.

What challenges or barriers are you experiencing in your practice?
E - Being a parent to a young child is incredibly difficult and takes up so much of my time. I am working on reframing what art making looks like in this chapter of my life and finding value in the act of being creative rather than putting all my worth in the end product.

What artists have inspired you recently?
E - Bisa Butler's show at the Art Institute of Chicago rocked my world last winter, I'm still not over that. I also love Alma Woodsey Thomas. I'm obsessed with her colors and patterns, her work reminds me great art does not have to be figurative. Carissa Potter Carlson illustrations speak deeply to me, validate my emotions, and make me feel seen.

Providing client-center care is another one of our core values. Client-centered care, also known as person centered care, is rooted in the belief that the client knows themselves best.

By entering therapeutic relationships with empathy and a judgement free lens, we help guide you on the path to healing that you feels the best to you. We approach therapy as a means for you to reach the goals you set for yourself rather than bringing our own agenda.

We work with you to build your self-awareness to see the light you already carry inside yourself. By focusing on the needs and supporting healing you identify, we are supporting the journey you want your healing and growing to take you to.

Mindfullness Moment:
Mindfulness can take only a minute. A minute of tuning into a sound, a feeling, a visual. A minute of being fully present with something or someone. A minute to honor yourself and the labor it takes to exist in our world.

And can we talk about the deeply satisfying bubbles forming from the water pour?

We caught up with our art therapist and founder of Rainy Day, Becca to see what's been happening in her creative practice.

What artists are you currently admiring? Have you discovered any new artists recently?
B - I really enjoy Joan Mitchel, Louise Bourgeois, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. In the past few years, I have been following Bri McDaniel and love her photography!

What have you been working on creative practice wise recently?
B - I've been skipping between two methods. One of them is a meditative watercolor where I build surface tension with a water drop, then break it with watercolor. The other, I stab holes in a canvas and attempt to sew it back together.

If any, what materials/techniques have you been curious about trying?
B - I started working with encaustic paints a few years ago and would like to make a few more attempts!

Winters in Chicago can be brutal. We're making nests at the studio today, driven by the urge to feel warm and nestle into restorative spaces to help cope with our winter blues.

Have you ever made foil and tape sculptures? We love them because the process is simple and you can create incredible things with fairly basic supplies.

Using aluminum foil, form a shape. Cover your shape with 1-2 layers of masking tape. Now let your creativity run wild, experiment covering you shape with paint, markers, ink, pastels, fabric, yarn, glitter, or whatever else inspires you.

One of our core values is providing trauma-informed care. We create spaces for our clients that are safe for healing and recovering.

We believe that our trauma experiences can significantly impact our mental health and behavior.

When you enter a safe space that acknowledges the connection between your trauma and health, helps you process the challenges you are facing, and supports your healing, you are taking action towards improving your sense of well being and empowerment.
