Gaslighting is about “one person trying to gain control of someone else,” says board-certified behavioral analyst Reena B. Patel. “[It's] breaking down someone’s trust and using their vulnerabilities to dismiss them and make them confused about what they think is really happening.”

Gaslighting describes making someone question their reality to gain control and shift blame. Experts explain how to spot it and share some common phrases.

What do we mean when we talk about health?

At GIA Chicago we believe that health is something that starts from within.

The direct link between physical and mental health is often overlooked. We know that being ill can make us feel down and that mental health can have physical side effects. This is why discussions around health need to start valuing factors such as happiness and health esteem as highly as nutrition and exercise.

Practicing good self-care helps set you up for success in almost all aspects of your life, but it can be hard to remember to take the time to focus on yourself.

The five pillars of self-care; physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual, all represent areas by which you can improve your quality of life.

Here are some tips to help you recharge your batteries and prevent burnout:

🌼Make some time for yourself - even if you can only find five or ten minutes, try and find time every day to put the screens away and take a moment to do something that is just for you.
🌼Stretch those legs! Studies have shown that even light exercise can improve your mental well-being across the board.
🌼You are what you eat - while it is ok to treat yourself every now and then, we can also take advantage of the gut-brain axis by eating foods that help improve our mood. Fresh fruit, eggs, and dairy have all been shown to aid in the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter vital for good mental health.

The recovery process can be a challenging journey, filled with ups and downs. It's important to remember that mistakes made along the way are not failures. Instead, they should be viewed as opportunities for growth and learning.

It's important to be kind to yourself and not to beat yourself up over past mistakes. It's natural to make mistakes, and it's important to remember that they are a normal part of the recovery process.

When you make a mistake, it's important to take a step back and reflect on what happened. Think about what you could have done differently, and what you can do to prevent the same mistake from happening in the future. This process of self-reflection can help you learn and grow, and ultimately lead to a better tomorrow

Change can be scary, but it can also be a powerful force for good. Embarking on recovery can mean the difference between continuing a cycle of destructive behavior and breaking free to live a fulfilling and healthy life.

Making the decision to seek help and enter recovery is a big step, and it often means leaving behind old habits and ways of thinking. It may mean saying goodbye to certain people or places that are associated with substance use. But these changes can lead to new opportunities and a chance to rebuild relationships and create a better future.

It's important to remember that change is necessary for growth and progress. Change can bring healing, hope, and a chance for a better tomorrow.
