Hey Friends, The question we might be asking ourselves in the new year is “”What is in the way of us realizing we are already enough?” Often what is holding us back is the thoughts, emotions, and beliefs that tell us we are not smart enough, skilled enough, or that things are never going to change. Fortunately mindfulness practice can help us learn over time to unwind and unhinge from these states of mind and allow us to see our lives clearly and help us build resilience. Join me for my six-week online course beginning February 19. Just click my website link at www.akindmindchicago.com and register. I look forward to seeing you soon!

"New studies show online mindfulness practice may help those with a depression history manage emotions in response to memories of personal past events.” It’s been shown in recent studies to be as effective in treating mild and medium depression as medication. Preliminary results from another recent study conducted at Georgetown University Medical Center showed that an 8-week guided mindfulness-based stress reduction course was as effective at treating anxiety as a common antidepressant medication. This is hopeful news.

Even though as humans we are hardwired from our evolution towards placing more importance on the negative experiences, the unpleasant, we can break this cycle by paying attention to the moments of quiet or simply the joy of witnessing and immersing ourselves in our natural environment. The experience of being part of the web of life and our connections to it. The joy of being alive and walking on this earth. It is in those moments that we can use all of our embodied presence to find the joyfulness of life itself.

Do you ever notice when you have a bunch of free time on your calendar, you fill it up with things to kill time. We tell ourselves it’s OK to do nothing and that we deserve some downtime, but we really don’t believe it. As we fill up the empty time with busyness, you feel wound up and not recharged.

Like trees, moment to moment, whether we do nothing or leap into unknown waters, our lives are in a constant state of flux. Through mindfulness, we can learn to engage with these changes in a wise, compassionate, and kind way as we navigate things like relationships, jobs, and our health. In this way, no matter what the season or weather, like the trees, we can be rooted, grounded, and resilient.
