At veterans cemeteries, both the land and headstones are the property of the government and as such there are rules specific to the care and maintenance. For example, no additions or alterations can be made to the headstone or marker, no artificial flowers are permitted at all, and visiting hours are stricter. To find out what the best times to visit are, contact us at 773-434-5200.

Did you know that you have to keep the weather in mind when scattering your loved one's ashes? It is important to be mindful of the weather and the people around you. To ensure the perfect ceremony, try to mentally walk yourself through the day and think about how you can plan for what's beyond your control.

Continuing to find entertainment in music, film, or art that the deceased enjoyed is a great way to keep their memory alive. Work with friends and family members to gather the person’s favorite songs and create a playlist everyone can enjoy together, or see if you can sing them together.

Timing and covertness when transporting the deceased's remains is a sign of respect and honor. Our team will ensure that your loved one is safely transported from home or care facilities, to our location, and finally to the funeral itself; it's this reason we work such flexible hours.

1. Don’t let anyone say it's crazy to be grieving the loss of a pet. Intense grief is natural and normal when losing a beloved member of the family.
2. Don’t expect to feel grief in only one way. Grief isn’t just one emotion. It is unique to everyone and comes in different ways, and lasts different amounts of time.
3. Honor their life in one way or another. For many, skipping this step inhibits the chance to begin the healing process.
4. Remember other pets can also grieve the loss. Make sure to give them extra love, attention and care.
5. Share feelings and emotions with a close, pet-friendly, friend. There's not need to grieve alone, and remember to practice self-care.

We believe cremation can and should be an experience. Saying goodbye to a loved one is necessary regardless of what you choose for the body’s final resting place. The grieving process starts at a funeral, celebration of life, or gathering of some sort. In planning for your own funeral, or at the time of need for a loved one, consider creating an experience for friends, families, colleagues, and neighbors to say goodbye and begin the grieving process. If you would like us to contact you to answer any questions regarding a celebration of life, let us know if you prefer communication by phone or email: http://burton-ewcalahanfuneralhome.celebrate-life.us/reach-out/
