Whooping cough cases have increased to record levels with four times as many cases compared to last year. There have been over 16,000 cases this year alone and two confirmed deaths, while in 2023 only 3,700 cases were registered nationwide. Whooping cough is caused by the bacteria Bordatella pertussis and can be prevented by the vaccines Tdap and or Dtap recommended to adults and children respectively. In the USA there has been a decrease in vaccination rates and rising rates of illnesses and preventable deaths.

It is especially important for those older than 65, at risk for severe COVID-19 or have never received a COVID-19 vaccine. Protection from prior vaccinations decreases over time.
