Scleral lens success! This patient had trauma to both of his eyes as a child (bottle cap in the right eye 20/70 and a metal coat hanger in the left eye 20/200) leading to significant scarring and loss of vision. Fortunately, we have been able to restore his vision with the help of scleral lenses. He now sees 20/25 out of his right eye and 20/40 out of his left eye 👌🏽

If you have keratoconus, irregular corneas or dry eye syndrome, please call our office to see if you are a candidate for specialty contact lenses. We have five locations in Chicago and we accept most vision and medical insurance plans.

“I wore hybrids for a year, that didn’t work out. I wore piggyback contacts, that didn’t work out.”

This patient has keratoconus and struggled for years with different modalities of contact lenses. We fit her into scleral lenses two years ago and she is thrilled with their performance. Scleral lenses provide excellent vision restoration and all-day comfort for patients with irregular corneas and can be life-changing!

This patient has suffered from for over 10 years and was only seeing 20/60 when he first visited . He was referred to our office for a specialty lens consultation to see if we could restore his vision. Due to the severity of his keratoconus, we fit him into custom-made scleral lenses. Two months later, he comfortably wears his sclerals 14+ hours per day, every day. Most importantly, he sees 20/20 again for the first time in 5 years!

This patient has keratoconus and compares his scleral lenses to a Porsche and it’s hard to disagree with him! Scleral lenses, like high performance cars, require more maintenance and care but it’s well worth it given the quality of vision and all-day comfort they provide.

“They’ve been life-changing!”

That’s how this keratoconus patient feels about his scleral lenses. We fit him into sclerals two years ago after he was struggling to see clearly with his soft contact lenses. He sees 20/400 with correction, 20/40 with soft lenses and now 20/15 with scleral lenses!

Scleral mapping is incredible technology and only available in less than 1% of contact lens practices in the US. We are fortunate to have this technology and it allows us to create 100% custom made scleral lenses for our patients. This leads to an optimized fit for our patients which means more COMFORT and better VISION! Today we did some advanced training for scanning acquisition and lens fit troubleshooting.

Last night I talked to a group of 70 optometrists about scleral Lenses and the positive impact they have on our patients’ lives. I’d like to thank the Kovach Eye Institute for inviting me to speak and I’d also like to thank all those that attended.

I’m excited about my upcoming talk next week: Specialty Contact Lenses for Keratoconus and Corneal Cross-Linking with Dr. Kevin Kovach.
A lot to discuss that night given the most recent advancements in both vision correction and treatment of keratoconus. There are a few seats left so if any ECPs are interested in attending, please contact Mariann at Kovach Eye Institute.

“I really haven’t been able to see clearly for the past five to six years.”

This patient has and struggled with poor vision with his glasses and soft contact lenses. He travelled two hours to visit our office to see if there are any vision correction options available to him that would restore his sight. After examining his corneas, we fit him into custom-made scleral lenses. He now sees 20/20 with his Sclerals and is able to comfortably wear them 14hours per day.

This patient is from Vancouver, Canada 🇨🇦 (my hometown!) and was diagnosed with keratoconus over 30 years ago. He has had corneal transplant surgery on both eyes and can only see 20/50 with spectacles. We fit him into custom-made scleral lenses this year and he now sees 20/20! The lenses are very comfortable and are able to be worn 14hrs per day.

Specialty Contact Lenses have been life changing for some of our patients. In this picture, I’m inspecting a scleral lens filled with preservative-free saline. Scleral lenses are large diameter lenses that vault over the cornea and rest entirely on the white of the eye, the sclera. The saline remains in between the back of the lens and the cornea. The saline fills in any irregularities on the corneal surface thus allowing light passing through it to focus much better. At we have had a lot of success with scleral lenses with patients with , , , , and among other conditions.
