🚨🔊 Announcing our first Doctor of Physical Therapy student at Velona Health in Hyde Park, Chicago 🔊🚨

Jeff is a 3rd-year Doctor of Physical Therapy student at Governors State University expected to graduate in May 2026. He is currently completing his last and final internship before his national board certification exam. 

Jeff is a Chicago native, born and raised in Chinatown/Bridgeport on the Southside. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago with a Bachelor's of Science in Rehabilitation Sciences with a Minor in Disability & Human Development. Immediately following his undergraduate degree, Jeff enlisted into Active Duty in the United States Navy to pursue the challenges of service and to face his fears of the unknown. 

Following his service, Jeff returned to his passion for physical therapy, accepting a seat in Governors State (GovState) University's Doctor of Physical Therapy program. While pursuing his clinical doctorate, Jeff is passionate about neurological rehabilitation, veterans' affairs, as well as professional conduct and development. These interests have led his involvement at his program's Stroke Support Group, Student Veterans Association, and Student Conduct Committee. He has expanded his role as a student leader in the Illinois Physical Therapy Association, and research assistant at a neurologic outpatient facility. 

Outside of physical therapy, Jeff is a loving pawrent to his pug, Dexter, and enjoys volunteering at One Tail at a Time dog shelter and adoption center.

Jeff will be with us until April 10th. Dr Julia PT, DPT, PCES has joined our Hyde Park location and will be seeing patients starting next week.

As a pelvic health specialist, we welcome her collaborations to patient care, celebrate her enthusiastic brain, and support her passion in community care.

Should we restart Balance Class?!

5-6 people per class, different textured surfaces, balance beams, eye exercises, beach balls, kaleidoscope glasses, laser pointers, and a whole pile of fun. Oh, and of course, you walk away with transferable skills to improve safety on snow/ ice, tripping on uneven sidewalks, navigating pot holes, dodging scooters and cyclists, and eventually more fun and happy things like sand and beach terrain.

A Mayo Clinic study found that the length of time someone can stand on one leg is a stronger indicator of healthy aging than muscle strength or walking speed. Balance declined faster with age than other physical measures, highlighting its importance for fall prevention and overall health."

Sometimes phone memories stop me in my tracks: One stark white room. One clinician. Hauling the 3 things I own to "clinic". A quiet dream to help someone, just one someone.

And, here we are.

Happy National Physical Therapy month!

This post is a funny one to write... This is my mentor Dr Mary J. Rogel, PhD, LAc of East Point Associates

Dr Mary has been an acupuncturist for almost 40 years and I have been learning from her for almost 4 years now. She literally does the best orthopedic manual therapy I have ever seen in addition to unbelievable orthopedic needling; I have watched her achieve things on people's bodies in one session that shouldn't be possible.

I'm choosing to add her to our October celebrations because (1) we're now office roommates in our new space, (2) I vehemently believe in continuing education, and (3)... Controversial opinion warning!!!... I think in 50-100 years from now all of us "body" people are going to need to choose a common label for ourselves and stop the Turf Wars.

We've seen some really beautiful interdisciplinary results on shared patients so far and I'm excited to keep learning from you. After almost 4 years, I still can't believe I have the privilege of even looking inside your brain and I'm humbled by the volume of what continues to lie ahead of me.

For those of you that have been treated by Mary, you'll know her shoes can never be filled.

Happy National Physical Therapy month! We're thrilled to continue celebrating our incredible staff.

Dogtor Kala Mimee: Human Resources & Morale Manager

She takes her job(s) very seriously. Kala ushers patients out at the end of their sessions and new patients into their spots. With 4 private treatment rooms, she is busy ALL day long. During sessions, she checks on patients who make sounds of pain and, if she asks to leave the room to check on someone else, when she returns she apologizes for her absence. Every one of our staff takes our customer experience very seriously at Velona.

I didn't realize how many special things happen in October! Velona Health's Birthday last week AND today is Kala's Gotcha Day too!!!

Please tell her what a Good Girl she is next time you see her.
