Our compassionate care is the thread that ties our providers and our patients and families together. Born prematurely, Daniel had a single ventricle heart defect and lung disease.

During American Heart Month, the Director of Palliative Care at La Rabida, Dr. Sarah Mitchell, says our team of clinical experts embraced Daniel and his mom, Evelyn, with comfort they wouldn’t have experienced anywhere else.

“Our approach was to meet him where he was, and support Evelyn, which allowed him to live and redefine what it means to thrive, even with chronic conditions,” says Dr. Mitchell. “He lived life to the fullest and taught us all we should be doing the same.”

CREATING SAFER COMMUNITIES: La Rabida's outpatient lobby is the newest site of a medication take-back disposal, as part of the Illinois Drug Take-Back Act.

This initiative is focused on creating a safer environment in every corner of the community by providing access to anonymous disposal of expired and/or unused medication.

Anyone can safely drop off prescription/non-prescription medication in the green disposal bin next to the security desk at the entrance.

Reminder: Remove all personal information on medication bottles or packaging. All items will be properly discarded.

We are proud to congratulate La Rabida Children’s Hospital President and CEO, Dr. Rolla T. Sweis, on her selection to the 2026 Cohort of Leadership Greater Chicago’s Daniel Burnham Fellowship.

We look forward to supporting her continued leadership and contributions as she works to address some of our region’s most complex challenges, including workforce and economic development and access to quality healthcare.

Our patients and families will forever feel your spirit of support! Thank you, Spirit Halloween and its initiative, and YOU! With each purchase from the store, a portion of the proceeds came back to support La Rabida's mission.

On Wednesday, our Child Life program received more than $45,000 from the company to help our Child Life specialists continue to turn an unfamiliar, stressful experience into a safer and less scary one.

"We listen, advocate, and walk beside our patients and their families throughout their journey," says Child Life Manager, Ericka Thomas. "We provide comfort preparation and a little bit of fun in the moments when it is most needed."

Celeste, 7, requires constant care and support as she navigates life with 1p36 deletion syndrome, a rare genetic condition. She drove away with our hearts during the summer of 2022 in her purple GoBabyGo adaptive car and flower-patterned hat, fueled by pure determination. Now, she’s back, using a new mode of independence: the Obi self-feeding device.

Occupational Therapist, Stephen B., says, Celeste is motivated for more control of her life. Read our February installment of Currents, detailing the 7-year-old's journey toward independence.

Dozens of teens took an hour out of their weekend to learn skills that could save lives at a CPR training. ❤️🫀🤝

As an anchor in the south side community, we partnered with I+COMPRESS, an organization educating students about cardiovascular health, to bridge the gap in access to quality healthcare.

The training empowered the 13 to 18-year-old students and student athletes to learn necessary hands-only CPR practices in case of emergencies.

We are grateful to Dr. Ravi Ramana and the I+COMPRESS team for their support of La Rabida's mission and advocacy for public health and wellness.

🌨️Cold and dry air can trigger irritation in the airways, causing coughing, difficulty breathing, and asthma attacks. There are differences between a respiratory virus and asthma attack symptoms. La Rabida's board-certified pediatric asthma and pulmonology clinicians remind families to stay hydrated, use a scarf to prevent winter flare-ups, and stay up-to-date on vaccinations.

Seek emergency help immediately if symptoms are severe or persist.

⚕️📋La Rabida's Outpatient Walk-in Clinic is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
