🍿Poppin' in to wish everyone a safe and warm weekend!

💛💙⛵ La Rabida President and CEO Dr. Rolla Sweis popped into each department to catch up with staff and share a little popcorn treat!

🤝🍿Thank you to Berco's Popcorn for donating these bins of savory snacks to our teams. P.S. We know we're a little corny! 😋

🎮🏀👾Kayden powered up his basketball skills from the comfort of his cabin! La Rabida's Corporate Advisory Board (CAB) shifted into campaign mode to fundraise and buy an Xbox console, accessories, and games for the gaming cart designed specifically for our patients!

Whether it's too cold to go outside or to adhere to infection prevention protocols, our new gaming cart gives patients a way to have fun, socialize, and maintain normalcy. Child Life Specialist Xavier S. lost this game to Kayden, but until the next rematch, other patients can play with him!

Thanks to Representative Will Davis for visiting La Rabida Children's Advocacy Center (CAC) this month to learn about the work we do to support children and families in the 30th District, which includes Harvey, Markham, Oak Forest, and Homewood.

Rachel McGinnis, director of the CAC, provided a tour of the facility and shared information on the role of the center in providing forensic interviews, support, and mental health resources to children and families who have experienced abuse and trauma in 30 municipalities in Chicago's southwest suburbs.

During cold snaps like today ... we look forward to warmer weather! Especially because this summer, Camp La Rabida returns to our beautiful Lake Michigan campus.

La Rabida is more than a center for expert pediatric medical care. We take a holistic approach focused on the whole child, creating positive experiences, such as summer camp, where patients build confidence, have fun, and learn through engaging, educational activities.

☀️😎⛱️We can’t wait for our patients and their siblings to create fun camp memories with us again this year! Stay tuned for more details on Camp La Rabida.⛵️💛💙

Forecasts show temperatures plummeting below zero this weekend in the Chicagoland area. Dr. Natasha Bhayani, La Rabida pediatrician, says children tend to be at higher risk for hypothermia and frostbite.

"Kids lose body heat more quickly than adults," says Dr. Bhayani. "Taking extra precautions is very important to keep kids safe during these extreme weather conditions."

✅ Here's a list of steps La Rabida doctors recommend to protect kids during freezing weather:

🧥 Dress kids in extra layers to trap body heat.
🌨️ Avoid or limit time outdoors.
🧣 Keep skin covered to protect against frostbite.
🧤 Insulated boots, mittens or gloves, and a hat are essential.
🧦 Make sure children change out of any wet clothes right away.
🌨️❕It's important that everyone is adequately hydrated, eating nutritious meals before and during any cold-weather activities.

She’s a courageous, talented teen full of heart and creativity. Meet Jessica, who has stylish designs and a vision for her wardrobe. When she wants to relax and unwind, she puts her sketch pencils to paper and lets inspiration take over.

🧶🧣🎨So far, she’s been able to knit a few items like a tablet case, small hats, and scarves. We are excited to see her go from drawing to sewing together her own fashion statements!

“I love seeing her excited,” says Mom, Emma. “No matter how hard things may seem, anytime she’s drawing, or knitting, creating something by hand, she’s enjoying herself. I love seeing it.”

"Everybody can be great because anybody can serve."

Inspired by the wisdom and advocacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., La Rabida staff come together each year for our MLK Day service project. This year, we supported our neighbors through a toiletry drive for the Grand Regency of South Shore formerly Coles Supportive Living, an assisted living community.

Thanks to George Hardin and Cheyanne Dye, who are part of our Employer of Choice committee, and dropped off the donations this week!

During National Human Trafficking Month, we recognize the work our trauma-informed experts provide to care for and empower children. La Rabida Children's Advocacy Center (LRCAC) helps victims who have experienced many kinds of child abuse and trauma.

In 2025, our staff trained 177 community members, conducted more than 528 child-friendly forensic interviews, and connected 343 children to mental health care through our specialists at La Rabida's Chicago Child Trauma Center (CCTC).

This year, LRCAC celebrates 40 years of advocacy for children and their families in 30 suburbs in southern Cook County, an area significantly impacted by poverty, violence, and crime. We proudly and compassionately continue to support our community to prevent child abuse and provide critical resources to instill hope and healing.
