🧬 What is Ectrodactyly?

Ectrodactyly is a rare congenital condition where a person is born with missing central fingers or toes, often creating a split or cleft appearance in the hand or foot. Because of this shape, it is sometimes referred to as “split hand/split foot malformation (SHFM)”.

Individuals with ectrodactyly may have two or three digits instead of five, and the remaining digits may be positioned on the outer sides of the hand or foot.

🦶 Feet most commonly affected:
The condition typically affects the middle toes, leaving the outer toes more developed, which can create a V-shaped or cleft appearance in the foot.

👨‍👩‍👧 Who does it affect?
Ectrodactyly is very rare and occurs in both males and females at similar rates. In some cases, it may be genetic, but it can also occur sporadically without family history.

🧠 Many people with ectrodactyly adapt extremely well and can live fully active and independent lives.
