Abhyanga is an ancient Indian Ayurvedic massage therapy for healing and detoxifying of the body, mind and spirit. This therapy is traditionally performed with ayurvedic herbal oils which are warmed up and applied on the body following a specific and pre-established sequence of rhythmic strokes. The therapeutic strokes move along the client’s energy channels, promoting the oil’s absorption, the unblocking of stagnant areas, and the restoration of natural energetic and lymphatic flows, relaxation states and overall homeostasis.
Traditionally, the treatment is performed with the client completely disrobed (while remaining draped on their private areas) and includes the oil massage of the scalp, face, neck, shoulders and back, area around the breasts, stomach, arms and hands, legs and feet. If needed, the client is welcome to request modifications of the draping and/or treatment to better fit their level of comfort.
Some meaningful differences compared to a “conventional” massage to consider:
– Massage of the client’s scalp (oil will get in their hair) and face (please be makeup-free for the session).
– Massage of the stomach and area around the breasts.
– Warm wet towels will be used to wipe off the excess oil on the skin. However, some oil may still remain in place and stain the client’s clothes. Please consider this when choosing what to wear to the session. You may also want to bring something to cover your head after the session. If wanted, clients are welcome to shower before putting their clothes back on.
The healing, nourishing, detoxifying and relaxing nature of this treatment can have a meaningful positive effect on cells, tissues, organs, circulatory and lymphatic systems, elimination systems, nervous system, etc.
It’s recommended to eat healthy and lightly, and stay hydrated (before and after the treatment), and to take the rest of the day for self-care (relaxation, sleep, a salt bath, etc).
