Housing instability affects entire communities.
Children fall behind when families move frequently.
Emergency room visits increase.
Neighborhoods struggle when people cannot build roots.
The financial and human costs add up quickly.
Stability changes everything.
When people have homes, families strengthen and communities thrive.
This is why our work matters.

Homelessness is rarely caused by one problem. Most people face multiple barriers that make it difficult to stay housed.
Job loss, health emergencies, domestic violence, mental health challenges, and the lack of
affordable housing all play a role.
These are not personal failures. They are systemic barriers.
Our work is to remove them, one person at a time.

Jerode spent much of his adult life on the West Side, navigating the daily uncertainty of life without a home.

That changed this year. With support from Renaissance, he moved into a bright, safe apartment in Lincoln Park, a place where he can breathe, rest, and plan for the future.

Today, Jerode enjoys simple moments many take for granted like riding his bike around the neighborhood or relaxing with music in his own space.

His story is proof that housing isn’t the end of the journey. It’s the start of dignity, stability, and hope.

Keeping a family housed before a crisis hits is one of the most powerful ways to reduce homelessness in Chicago.

Most people are one unexpected bill away from losing their home. A car repair, a medical issue, or missed pay can turn stability into a crisis fast.

Our Homelessness Prevention Program steps in at the right moment with short term support like rent help, urgent expense vouchers, and case management. It keeps families in their homes, keeps kids in school, and helps adults stay on track with work and health.

Prevention works. It protects lives before harm happens.

“They choose to be homeless.”
You’ve heard it.
Maybe you’ve even thought it.

But here’s the real story : the one that doesn’t fit into a headline or a heated comment thread.

Most people experiencing homelessness in Chicago didn’t “end up there” overnight. It starts with a job loss. A sudden eviction. A health emergency. A violent relationship they had to escape. And once they’re out? The system isn’t built to pull them back in, it’s built to keep them surviving, not thriving.

At RSSI, we work every single day to get people into permanent homes and we don’t stop there. We offer case management, mental health support, job help, family services. Because solving homelessness isn’t just about a roof. It’s about stability. Dignity. Future.

So yeah, this work is hard. It’s slow. It’s rarely glamorous. But it’s working.

And here’s where you come in.

Renaissance is working hard to make sense of the radical shift in federal policy regarding homelessness. We will do all we can to preserve permanent supportive housing options for vulnerable individuals and families. Your support is vital. Any amount will help during these turbulent times. https://bit.ly/4pmALa5

From the National Alliance to End Homelessness

We know what's coming is bad.

But this isn't just bad policy. It's impossible policy.

It just won't work:

Funds will expire before additional federal resources are granted. Organizations won't have the means to keep housing people, and people may be left homeless.

The application will only be open for 10 weeks. This isn't nearly enough time for organizations to complete a radically different application with this many changes.

The money can't go out on time.

And if there's no money, no one gets off the streets.

More than half of the 2026 funding for the program will be shifted from permanent housing to transitional housing with work and service requirements.

Two years ago, Emelin’s journey with Renaissance began. Today, her family is thriving.

Her children, now three and four, are full of energy, curiosity, and joy. Their home is bright, stable, and close to the schools they will soon attend.

While raising two little ones on her own, Emelin is studying for her associate degree and also tutors young students in math and reading. Her determination is powerful.

She often says, “the decisions you make in your life are what you get in life.”

At Renaissance, our role is to walk beside her with support, care, and community.

💙 Families like Emelin’s show what hope can do.

Our Story

Renaissance Social Services is changing the lives of individuals and families in Chicago, giving them hope and vision for a new life. By supporting communities and supporting the people who live within them with quality affordable housing, behavioral healthcare, outreach, homeless prevention and compassionate support services, we provide the opportunity for stability and wellness.

Renaissance Social Services, Inc.focuses on Chicago’s most vulnerable homeless residents– those who have mental health issues, physical disabilities, and chronic illnesses. Many of our participants have been formerly incarcerated, are dealing with substance use issues, or have been victims of domestic abuse.

Our work provides safety, security, and peace of mind to Chicago’s homeless by helping them locate affordable housing in all parts of the City, and then providing ongoing support though regular meetings with social workers with expertise in addressing homelessness and housing issues. Our staff helps each participant get the services he/she/they needs to address their mental and physical health issues, improve their well being, and thrive.
