We often spend a lot of time examining the negative “what ifs,” rarely giving ourselves the opportunity to balance our thinking by imagining the positive “what ifs”—what if things go better than expected? What if I succeed? What if the situation pans out positively? If you focus on what could go wrong, often the self-fulfilling prophecy occurs—we create the very circumstances we fear. It’s also often a fruitless effort to worry about the “what ifs,” as situations often don’t turn out as negatively as we predicted. In general, we tend to overestimate the changes of something turning out poorly and underestimate our ability to cope with situations. Next time you notice yourself worrying about things go wrong, balance your thinking by imagining your feared scenario turning out better than expected.

Let this be a friendly reminder that your past does not have to dictate your future. All of us have things that we carry from our pasts that feel heavy, painful, or shameful. While we can’t go back and rewrite history, we can work through what we feel now to create a new narrative that doesn’t define where we are going.

In therapy, we can spend time in the present, but inevitably, the things from our past that are still impacting us can show up in the here and now. It might feel futile at times to go back and look at the past, especially when it feels painful, but the reason we do it is to liberate us in the present and in the future.

When someone violates your boundaries, make sure you have a plan. Your boundaries communicate to others what treatment you will and will not tolerate. People won't always respect our boundaries, and when they don't, it is up to us to reinforce and maintain our limits.

What boundaries are you setting today?

To Practice Alternate Nostril Breathing:
Find yourself in a comfortable seated position.
Position your right hand by folding your pointer, middle and ring finger into your palm, leaving your thumb and pinky sticking up (some find it most comfortable to tuck the middle and pointer finger, leaving the thumb, ring and pinky finger up).
Bring your thumb to the right side of your nose and your pinky to the left side.
Close your eyes or take a soft gaze in front of you.
Close off your right nostril with your thumb.
Inhale through your left nostril.
Close off your left nostril with your pinky finger.
Release and exhale through your right nostril.
Inhale through your right nostril.
Close off your right nostril with your thumb.
Release and exhale through your left nostril.
Inhale through your left nostril.
Close off your left nostril and exhale through your right nostril.
Inhale through your right nostril.
Close off your right nostril, release your left nostril and exhale through your left nostril.
Continue for about 10 rounds or as long as feels comfortable.
If you notice your mind begins to wander, bring yourself back to the present moment by focusing on the words inhale and exhale or focus on the sensation of your breath as it enters (cool) and exits (warm) your nostrils.

Pause. Take a deep breath. Drop into how you’re feeling…

Often, when we pause for a few moments and pay attention to our thoughts, feelings and body sensations, we can learn what our body and mind really need.

Are you missing anything today? Is there something you need a little more of? Do you need to do something different than what was originally planned for the day?

These can be important questions to ask yourself on days when you are feeling off or not feeling like yourself.

It’s important to ask yourself what you need and just as important (and sometimes much harder) to honor what your mind and body are asking for.

Whether you need compassion, patience, support or strength, here are some examples of things you can do to fuel whatever it is you may need:

- mediate
-take a few deep breaths
-spend time in nature
- go for a walk
-speak kindly to yourself
-practice yoga
- journal
-take a warm bath
-talk to or spend time with a good friend
-move or stretch your body
-rest
-pet your animal friend
-say no if something doesn’t feel right
-cancel or adjust your plans
-ask for help
-forgive yourself
-take a nap
-make/eat a comforting meal
-plan something you’re excited about
-talk about how you feel
