Michelle Emerick, Psy.D.

Michelle Emerick, Psy.D. Michelle Emerick, PsyD is a clinical psychologist on the northside of Chicago. Not sure where you are going? As a result, therapy is tailored to each individual.

She offers individual and couple's counseling specializes in affirming LGBTQ individuals, fostering healthy communication and relationships. Are there aspects of your life your life you wish to change? Or do you wish your relationships were more satisfying? As a licensed clinical psychologist, my role is to serve as a support while you try to get there. Starting therapy is a courageous step towards gaining more control in your life. I offer a safe space where you can describe your unique experience and feel heard without judgment or criticism. With a focus on self-care, empowerment, and authenticity; therapy can help you pay attention to what you really want and who you really are. During our collaboration, we will find a method to help you get there. Honored to have had the privilege to support LGBTQ community members, kink and poly folx and others that find their identities marginalized by others as well as their allies. I have particular in supporting individuals with gender variance with or without interest in transitions as well as the unique experiences of international LGBTQ individuals. I use an integrative approach, which refers to a therapist's ability to see each person as an individual and consider their unique experiences during treatment planning. Some orientations used are: client-centered/humanistic, cognitive-behavioral, feminist, interpersonal and psychodynamic approaches. I will consult with each individual about past therapy and life experiences to determine what methods are most helpful in promoting growth and lasting change. Special consideration will be given to incorporating client's current strengths and resources. In my work I have had the opportunity to support clients of all ages from very diverse experiences and backgrounds. Presenting issues that clients can address in therapy include:•Assessing current relationships
•Assertiveness training
•Changing careers
•Managing depression
•Managing anxiety
•Exploring gender identity and transitions
•Exploring sexuality and sexual orientation
•Emotional, physical and sexual abuse
•Developing positive communication skills
•Women's issues
•Self-esteem
•Sleep and Insomnia
•Chronic medical issues, such as HIV
•Mourning and grief
•Pet loss
•LGBTQQIA
•Developing better coping skills for complicated or everyday problems. I currently accept check or cash payments and I currently accept Blue Cross / Blue Shield PPO insurance.

The new year often brings a time of reflecting on our lives and considering whether we are where we want to be, doing what we want to be doing, and whether we are caring for ourselves and others the way we could be. If this is you, therapy may be a way to support you to make the changes you want. I currently have openings for telehealth using BCBS PPO or Aetna PPO. I look forward to hearing from you.

On June 24th I had the privilege of training almost 100 healthcare providers about lgbtq-affirming care. Excited to know that there are that many more affirming providers in Southern IL. A good way to end Pride month!

I am very excited to announce that I have recently returned to private practice and currently have openings in my practice! Supporting clients through therapy is an honor, but nourishes me as well and I am overjoyed to be able to return to this work full time. If you or someone you know is seeking therapy in hopes of bringing their genuine self forward, please let me know. While I specialize in working with LGBTQ, poly, and kink, I truly work with everyone. Please allow me to help you use your strengths to address relationship issues, foster healthy communication and self-advocacy, and minimize the effects of trauma, stigma, depression and anxiety on your life. Take care.
