Happy International Cookie Day!!!

Lunch as a BCBA = 10% eating, 90% multitasking.
BCBA lunch break or speed challenge? You tell me. 🍽️🧠

We joke, but this is real life in the world of ABA, BCBAs, and RBTs. We're trying to balance solid clinical work, documentation, and actually remembering to eat.

If you’re an ABA therapist, BCBA, or RBT, you get it:
Have you ever had a real lunch break at work… or is it always a “lunch-ish” break? 😂

A BCBA superpower: not “ignoring”… just strategically withholding attention. 💬
Welcome to ABA 101: following the plan, not the feelings.
..

As BCBAs and RBTs, this is one of our core skills:

✅ following the behavior intervention plan,
✅ keeping our attention on replacement behaviors, and
✅ staying calm and consistent while the behavior runs its course.

This approach helps us reduce attention-maintained behaviors and make more room for functional communication and independent skills.

This season, we’re feeling especially grateful.

To our families – thank you for trusting us with your children, for showing up to appointments, workshops, and tough conversations, and for partnering with us day after day. Your advocacy and love inspire everything we do.

To our clients – you are the heart of Silveira. The effort you bring to every session, every small step, every big win… it matters. We see your hard work, your courage, and your growth, and we are honored to be part of your journey.

To our team – BCBAs, RBTs, admin, and support staff – thank you for your patience, creativity, and care. You go above and beyond for our clients and for each other, and this place would not be what it is without you.

It truly takes a village, and we are so grateful that you are ours. 🫶

Warmly,

Miladys & SBC Team

🌟 This is our job now 🌟

Remember when you thought being a BCBA meant sitting at a desk? 😅

Welcome to adulthood as a BCBA:
✅ Hiding in cushions
✅ Belly-scootering across the floor
✅ Making weird noises for joint attention
✅ Calling this “work” 🙃

We traded spreadsheets for scooters and professional small talk for silly, intentional play. Because THIS is how our kids learn best.

Which one are you: the cushion ninja, scooter champ, or sound-effects specialist? 😂

🌟 November Parent Workshop Series Recap 🌟

This month at Silveira Behavior Consulting, we hosted a 3-week series built to support and empower the families we serve. Even though we can’t share photos of parents (to respect privacy), we’re excited to highlight what we covered each week:

Week 1: Barriers to Treatment
We explored the real-world barriers families face—scheduling, overwhelm, transportation, and consistency—and shared practical strategies for staying engaged in treatment.

Week 2: Caregiver Burnout & Self-Care
We talked openly about the emotional load caregivers carry and shared evidence-based tools for identifying burnout and building sustainable self-care routines.

Week 3: IEP Navigation & Advocacy
Our final workshop, led by Lydia Garza, M.Ed., gave parents a clear, empowering framework for preparing for IEP meetings, understanding goals, and advocating confidently.

Thank you to all the families who attended, asked questions, and engaged in meaningful discussion.

And thank you to our team for providing childcare, translation support, and creating a warm, supportive environment every week.

We look forward to hosting more caregiver education events in 2026!

✨ Expanding Language Through Play ✨

Play isn’t just fun. It’s one of the most effective ways to build meaningful communication skills. In this session, we focused on layering language targets naturally into play. Here’s a quick breakdown of the 7 strategies you’ll see in the video:

1. Building Receptive Skills: Scan, Search, Find!
We start by strengthening a child’s ability to locate and identify items. This increases attention, engagement, and early receptive understanding.

2. Expanding Independence through Choice Making
Offering choices (“Do you want the seal or the horse?”) builds autonomy and empowers learners to communicate their preferences.

3. Applying Actions: Show the Movement
Using toys and actions (“Make it jump!” “Show me how its swims!”) helps kids connect verbs with real movement, a key step in expanding expressive language.

4. Expanding Labels: Add a Description
We take labeling one step further by encouraging descriptive language. Instead of “horse,” we model “brown horse"

5. Fill-in-the-Blank: Animal Sounds
An easy and playful way to teach early vocalizations and imitation! Pause and let the child fill in the sound (“The horse says… neigh!”).

6. Shaping Self-Advocacy During Play
We embed opportunities for the child to request help, decline, or direct the play. Self-advocacy is communication too — and it starts early.

7. Prompting WH Questions: Who, What, Where
Introducing simple WH questions during play sets the foundation for conversational skills and comprehension.

Why this matters:
When language targets are embedded into play, learning becomes more natural, motivating, and meaningful. Whether you’re an RBT, BCBA, or parent, these strategies help create an environment where communication grows organically.

Every family faces tough moments—but how do you know when it’s time to seek extra help?

Here are a few signs that support could make a difference:
1. Behaviors are becoming more intense or frequent.
2. Daily routines (mealtimes, bedtime, school transitions) feel like constant battles.
3. You’re feeling stuck, even after trying different strategies.

Reaching out doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it means you’re ready for change.

Behavioral support can help you understand what’s driving those behaviors and build tools that make life calmer, more predictable, and more connected. 💙

Big emotions can feel overwhelming for kids AND parents.
When your child’s feelings hit hard, here’s a simple 3-step approach that can help:
1️⃣ Pause. Take a breath before reacting—this models regulation and gives your child a moment to reset.
2️⃣ Validate. Acknowledge what your child is feeling (“You’re upset because playtime ended.”) before jumping into problem-solving.
3️⃣ Guide. Offer one small, specific strategy (“Let’s take three deep breaths together.”).
When we respond calmly and consistently, kids learn that feelings are safe—and manageable. 💙
