As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, I want to challenge you to remember to show yourself some grace. We put so much pressure on ourselves to look, think or behave in certain ways to the point that it becomes exhausting. Take it easy on yourself for a change.

It's Mental Health Awareness Month. I challenge you to do something small everyday in the month of May that prioritizes your mental health. This could be as simple as taking a few extra deep breaths, getting out in nature or calling a love one just to chat. What are some other ways you can take care of your mental health each day?

I've been teaching a lot lately on the dynamics of the drama triangle, sometimes referred to as the victim's triangle. My clients find it helpful to know what role they are in at any given time. There maybe one particular role you find yourself in constantly. However, it's possible to cycle in and out of each role.

The victim: You feel wronged, hurt, or disappointed by someone else.

The prosecutor: You punish others for their behavior. You're the enforcer of the "law" or moral code.

The rescuer: You rescue or save another from the consequences of their actions/emotions.

You can participate in all three roles during one incident. For instance, someone lied to you. You are now a victim of another's dishonesty. You are triggered, so you yell and scream at the other person. You are now the prosecutor. But then you start feeling guilty because the other person is feeling bad. You begin to profusely apologize to the other person, rescuing them from their own feelings. The drama triangle can get even more complicated than this example, especially when someone plays victim to rope you into their drama. But that's a different post for a different day!

Thank you and for inviting me to be a part of such an important conversation. The role of mental health is so imperative when discussing methods to curb the gun violence in our city. More mental health resources are needed in black and brown communities to support the emotional well-being of our children and families.
