The Nerve Growth Factor Research on Lion's Mane Is Real. Most Products Just Don't Contain Enough to Do Anything.
If you've heard that Lion's Mane can support focus and brain health and decided to try it â and then felt basically nothing after a few months â that's not you. It's probably what was in the bottle.
Here's what the research actually shows: *Hericium erinaceus* produces two compound classes found nowhere else in nature â hericenones, which come from the fruiting body, and erinacines, found in the mycelium. Both have been studied in preclinical research for stimulating nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein your brain relies on to maintain and repair neurons, support learning, and drive the kind of neuroplasticity that underlies memory formation. The most cited human clinical trial â a 2009 double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in *Phytotherapy Research* â found that adults with mild cognitive impairment who took Lion's Mane daily showed significant improvements on cognitive assessments over 16 weeks. Scores declined once supplementation stopped. That's a measurable result tied to a mechanism, not a wellness brand making things up.
What the research doesn't show is that any Lion's Mane capsule will do this. The hericenones are concentrated in the fruiting body â the actual mushroom. A significant chunk of what's sold under the Lion's Mane label is myceliated grain: mycelium grown on oats or rice, ground up before the mushroom ever fruits, and encapsulated with the grain substrate still in it. The mycelium can't be separated from the grain. So what ends up in the bottle is starch-heavy, low on actual bioactive compounds, and functionally missing the hericenone profile that makes Lion's Mane worth taking. Lab tests have caught major brands with over 50% starch content and nearly undetectable beta-glucans. That's the product people are taking and wondering why nothing is happening.
If you want to know whether what you're buying will actually work, ask three things: Is it made from fruiting bodies or myceliated grain? Is it a true dual extract â hot water for the water-soluble beta-glucans, ethanol for the fat-soluble compounds?
At Fruiting Bodies, we use 100% USA-grown fruiting bodies â dual-extracted with hot water and 190-proof organic cane ethanol via soxhlet, then ultrasonically sonicated to push bioavailability up. Third-party tested every batch.
If you've been curious about Lion's Mane and haven't found the right product yet, that's the starting point.
