Those first weeks of breastfeeding can feel intense, but what you’re experiencing is usually very normal.

In the first weeks, the best way to know if breastfeeding is working isn’t a strict schedule—it’s diapers and weight gain. Newborns typically nurse more than eight to 12 times every 24 hours. Breastfeeding isn’t just good for babies—it can be a powerful investment in a mother’s long‑term health, too.

Nursing supports postpartum recovery, may lower lifetime risks of breast and ovarian cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, and can ease stress through oxytocin’s calming effects. It also saves time and money compared with formula and strengthens parent‑baby bonding.
