Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) most often develops in the deep veins of the legs, particularly in the calf or thigh. This is the most common location due to slower blood flow and increased pressure in the lower extremities.
However, DVT is not limited to the legs. It can also occur in:
β’ arms (upper extremity DVT)
β’ pelvis
β’ abdomen
β’ neck or chest veins (less common).
No matter where it develops, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious medical condition that requires prompt evaluation and treatment. If left unrecognized, it can lead to life-threatening complications such as pulmonary embolism (PE). Symptoms may include swelling, pain, warmth, skin discoloration, or unexplained discomfort in the affected area. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to reduce complications and protect overall health.
If you experience symptoms or have risk factors for DVT, a professional vein evaluation is strongly recommended! At Chicago Vein Institute, our team does same-day ultrasounds of the deep venous system to rule out deep vein thrombosis.
