I like to think I’m subtle about it, but apparently I have… a type 🫣

Clothing with food on it. Small plates. Something pickled. A table that’s a little too full. A messy kitchen, and being in my Bubbe era.

Anyway, if you’ve ever looked around your kitchen and realized you’ve built your personality around this… welcome, you’re in good company! 💛

Sounded good, might change later. Might add some extras. What’s on your seder menu?

…and yes, I did write about it! 😉

Because the version of me with a Seder menu planned in advance is… a different person. She’s calm. She’s organized. She’s not peeking under the lid on her pot of matzo balls.

She’s lighting candles on time. She knows what’s been prepped. She might even be… sitting down with a glass of wine??

Meanwhile, unplanned me is holding a wooden spoon in one hand, burning three things at once, and seriously considering if dinner can just be matzo and butter.

Anyway. I’ve met both versions of myself and I know which one I prefer.

This is how I *actually* build a menu 👀

Before I even think about what I want to cook, I ask: what can people actually eat? Allergies, preferences, strong opinions about mushrooms… all noted.

Then I keep it simple:

One protein (beans, tofu, eggs, cheese-something that holds the meal down)
One starch
One cooked veg
One raw veg

It’s not a rigid formula, it just… works. The table feels full, everyone has something to eat, and I’m not in the kitchen questioning my life choices at 6:47pm on a Friday.

If you want the full breakdown of how I plan, prep, and keep my sanity intact, I walk through everything in this week’s Shabbat Club episode 💛 Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/

I know I was meant to be Jewish every time I eat Jewish food and think, "damn, we're good".

Warm challah, bagels loaded with schmear, something pickled, and a table that way too much food and still feels like it could use one more thing.

Anyway, if there’s challah involved, I’m staying 🍞✨

If you’re in your hosting era, I’ve been sharing all my Seder tips (and the recipes that make it feel like this) over on my Substack, Little Bites. Link in bio 💌

When I first moved to Chicago, I knew one person. Then I realized I'd been building community for most of my life.

So I started hosting, sharing, and making friends over my Shabbat table. And now? It's my whole personality.

If you’re figuring it out as you go, you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be. And if you want recipes that make the process a little easier, they’re all in my cookbook Nosh - you can find it through the link in my bio 💌

Every time someone says a dish “can’t possibly be that good” because it’s just vegetables… I feel a little more motivated to prove them wrong.

Vegetables have flavor. Texture. Personality! They caramelize, soften, crisp up, soak up sauces, and honestly do more interesting things than people give them credit for.

Half the time the real issue isn’t the vegetables, it’s that they’ve only ever met them overcooked and under-seasoned 🫣

Anyway. If a vegetable dish has ever changed your mind about vegetables… I want to hear about it 👀
