I read an article today that I thought was too interesting not to share. For the past 21 years I have worked to improve people's hearing. In that time hearing aids have changed a lot. Not only have they become smaller but they are also more able to distinguish between speech and noise. This distinction in sound processing improves how those wearing hearing aids hear conversation when background noise is present. Almost everyone (those with and without hearing loss) would agree that background noise can make it harder to concentrate and hear. But, what I didn't know, and learned in this article, is that a certain level of noise can get your creative juices flowing!

I saw this article today and thought it was an interesting way to explain the communication difficulties that come with hearing loss to someone with normal hearing.

One silver lining of the pandemic is that hearing people have now come to realize what people with hearing loss have always known — concentrating on conversation takes work!

Many of my patients report that it is hardest for them to hear when they are in an environment with background noise such as a restaurant or larger family gathering. This is partly due to their hearing loss but also related to how someone with hearing loss processes speech in background noise. This study does a great job of explaining what is occurring when someone with hearing loss mishears what is said when there is competing sounds or background noise present.

Even though more research is needed there appears to be a link between COVID-19 and hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo. If you have had COVID-19 and are now noticing changes in your hearing or balance talk to your doctor and schedule an audiologic evaluation.

A new review identifies links between SARS-CoV-2 and tinnitus, hearing loss, and vertigo. Possible causes include blood clots and infection of nerves.

I'm sure we are all ready to shed our face masks but until then here is a new study on how different face masks affect speech. Unfortunately, the clear mask, which is great for lip reading, reduced speech the most.
