I had the honor of presenting a webinar, When Love Hurts: Understanding Pet Loss and Gentle Tools for Coping, for Mental Health America on January 20, 2026, focused on pet loss, grief, and the often-invisible emotional impact of the human–animal bond.
Pet loss is frequently minimized; yet for many individuals, it represents a profound attachment rupture that can activate intense grief, trauma responses, and feelings of isolation. This webinar created space to recognize that loss as real, valid, and deserving of compassionate, informed support.
I am deeply grateful to Morayo Orly, Programs & Development Director of Mental Health America of Illinois, for her vision and for highlighting the importance of inclusive grief education. I also appreciate her leadership in providing a platform to elevate conversations around disenfranchised grief, emotional regulation, and accessible coping tools for bereaved pet guardians. Special thanks as well to Dr. Josefina Alvarez for making this connection possible.
Thank you to everyone who attended, engaged, and shared your reflections. Continued dialogue and education are essential as we work toward more humane and responsive mental health systems.

FEE-WAIVED ADOPTIONS EXTENDED INTO MONDAY 🎉

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Paws in Pajamas event today. The turnout has been amazing, and we loved seeing so many animals leave the shelter and go home the very same day. 💙

We also heard from several people that Bears game plans shifted their day, which we completely understand. Because of that, and the strong turnout we saw, adoption fees will also be waived tomorrow, Monday.

Tomorrow is Martin Luther King Jr. Day & Chicago Animal Care and Control will be open and operating as normal, with extra volunteers here to help you find the right match.

Thank you to everyone who came out, shared our posts, and supported our animals. We hope to see you tomorrow so we can help even more animals start their next chapter. 🐾

📍 2741 S Western Ave
🕛 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. (arrive by 5:30 p.m.)

🐶 City of Chicago residents must pay a $5 dog license fee.

Go Bears. 🐻💙

🐾🧸 6 DAYS TO GO: PAWS IN PAJAMAS 🧸🐾

This Sunday, Chicago Animal Care and Control is turning adoption day into a cozy, pajama themed event and we’re officially in the final countdown.

After sharing our 2025 Year in Review last week, one thing is clear: more animals are coming through our doors, and keeping lifesaving moving forward depends on what happens next. Adoption is a huge part of that.

In less than a week, we’ll be waiving adoption fees for all of our adoptable dogs and cats ready to meet their people. Some will be dressed for the occasion. All of them will be hoping this is the say someone chooses them... ❤️

✨ Adoption fees waived Sunday, January 18th ✨

📍2741 S Western Ave, Chicago, IL

🐶 If you live in the City of Chicago, there’s a $5 dog license fee that cannot be waived but can be paid at the shelter.

Not able to make it Sunday? Adoption fees are always waived for pets who have been here 30 days and over. And sharing this post helps these animals reach someone who can show up.

🕛 Adoption hours are 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
If you’re ready to adopt that day, please arrive by 5:30 p.m.
