Your skincare routine should be a ritual of nourishing self-care, not a sneaky stressor to your system.
Here's something most people don’t realize: many everyday products are quietly damaging fertility and interfering with hormone balance. These endocrine disruptors can send confusing signals to your body, and that can ripple out in unexpected ways...

✨ Unexplained infertility
✨ Breakouts that won’t budge
✨ Irregular or unpredictable cycles
✨ Mood swings, fatigue, or brain fog

If any of that sounds familiar, don’t panic. You don’t have to toss everything in your bathroom or make huge changes overnight. You can start gradually and make small changes that add up over time.

Here’s where to start:

1️⃣ Flip the bottle & ignore the hype

Ignore what the label promises and peek at the ingredients instead. Watch out for parabens, phthalates (often hiding under “fragrance”), and triclosan. These are known hormone disruptors - and sadly, they’re still everywhere.

2️⃣ Rethink your relationship with “fragrance”

That lovely smell? It might be masking a cocktail of chemicals. Especially for products that sit on your skin for hours (like lotion or deodorant), look for fragrance-free or naturally scented options.

3️⃣ Begin with the basics

You don’t need a full overhaul. Start with what touches your skin every day: your moisturizer, facial cleanser, or body lotion. Even a few mindful swaps can lighten your body’s toxic load over time.

4️⃣ Choose clarity over clutter

Simple, transparent ingredients go a long way. Fewer chemicals = fewer mixed signals for your body to process.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about honoring your hormones and creating an environment where your body feels safe, balanced, and supported—inside and out.

💬 Curious what product swaps I recommend most for women supporting fertility or dealing with hormonal symptoms? Drop the word SKINCARE below and we’ll send you a link to our collection of super clean skin products.

The kitchen isn’t just where meals are made—it’s also a space filled with materials, surfaces, and packaging that the body has to process alongside food. Many of these can quietly burden the endocrine (or hormone) system, especially when they show up day after day.

Making thoughtful changes to reduce this exposure doesn’t mean replacing everything at once. Small, gradual shifts, especially with daily items, can make the kitchen environment more supportive for hormonal balance and whole-body health.

Here are a few gentle upgrades that can reduce everyday toxin load:

🍳 Swapping nonstick pans for cast iron or stainless steel

Nonstick teflon coatings break down with heat and time, releasing endocrine-disrupting particles into the air and food. Cast iron and stainless steel offer safer, more durable alternatives and have much longer lives than their nonstick cousins.

🍳 Using glass containers instead of plastic for leftovers

Heat and acidity increase how quickly chemicals leach from plastic into food. Glass containers or repurposed jars are a safer, longer-lasting option, especially for soups, sauces, or still-hot leftovers.

🍳 Choosing wooden cutting boards over plastic

Plastic boards can develop deep grooves over time, trapping food particles and bacteria (eww) while shedding plastic particles into your food. Wooden boards dry more completely, creating a cleaner and more natural prep surface while naturally fighting off nasty bugs.

🍳 Upgrade kitchen utensils to wood, silicone, or stainless steel

Those common black plastic spatulas and spoons release microplastics and hormone-disrupting chemicals, especially when exposed to heat. Swapping them out for wooden, silicone, or stainless steel is a simple way to reduce exposure from everyday cooking.

None of these changes need to be difficult or expensive, but collectively, they create a kitchen space that supports the body’s ability to absorb nourishment without asking it to work overtime filtering out what doesn’t belong.

Trying to conceive can feel like you're stuck in limbo.

The emotional ups and downs, constant tracking, and disappointment month after month. It’s exhausting. You’ve tried the diets, supplements, apps, and more than one appointment. Maybe you've even gone through IUI or IVF. And yet, here you are… still waiting, still hoping.

If this sounds familiar, please know: you’re not alone and you’re not doing anything wrong.

At our clinic, we see this every day. Couples working so hard to make changes, but still struggling to conceive and feeling lost in the process. Fertility is not just about timing or doing everything “right.” It’s about understanding what your body needs and supporting it to feel safe, nourished, and in balance. Fertility is a reflection of your overall health, and sometimes the blocks are not just coming from your reproductive system.

This is where acupuncture, functional, and East Asian medicine come in.

Our gentle, individualized approach helps:
• Improve blood flow to the ovaries and uterus
• Balance your hormones naturally, without synthetic drugs
• Regulate your cycle and improve egg quality
• Calm your nervous system to reduce the stress-fertility feedback loop
• Create the optimal environment for conception—whether naturally or with IVF support

When we work with couples who are trying to conceive, we look at the whole picture through both an Eastern and Western lens. We consider your symptoms, your stress levels, your history, and the patterns your body is showing us. Then we create a plan together to bring your body back into fertile balance.
You deserve to feel supported. To feel connected to your body again. To feel hopeful.

Let’s talk about what’s been going on and how we can help. Your next step doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Let’s map out a personalized plan that supports your body and your dream of building your family.

Your body is wired for sunlight—not screens.

Each morning, your internal clock waits for cues from the natural world. And one of the most powerful signals? Morning light.

Natural light is full-spectrum and constantly shifting - red-tinged at dawn and dusk - blue-rich at mid-day, - offering just what your body needs at the right time of day.

☀️ Morning light helps:

Wake up your brain and metabolism with a healthy cortisol rise

Support mood and motivation via dopamine production

Reinforce your circadian rhythm so sleep comes easier later

In the evening, the sky softens. Red and amber light gently prepare your system for rest by protecting melatonin, your sleep and recovery hormone.

Simple steps to support your rhythm:

✨ Step outside within 30 minutes of waking—even just for 5 minutes

✨ Take an afternoon sun break if you can

✨ Dim screens and overhead lights after sunset (and choose warmer bulbs with less blue light)

✨ Create a truly dark space for sleeping

These small shifts can make a big impact on how rested, resilient, and balanced you feel.

How do you protect your circadian rhythm?

Your Period Pain Isn’t Going Away On Its Own

You down advil, take magnesium, try the herbs that helped your friend - and your period pain still screams every month. It keeps you from staying on track with your self-care, let alone your job. It keeps you from fully enjoying your vacation or summer - a hailstorm on your parade.

Not all period pain is created equal—and that’s why the treatment that worked for your sister isn't working for you. There are many different root causes of period pain, each requiring a different approach.

We tailor our treatments to YOU. We help our clients kick all kinds of period pain:

🔴 Dull, achy cramping that starts before your period and comes with a mood that makes your loved ones cower in fear. (We call this Stuck Qi)
🔴 Sharp, stabbing pain on the first days of your period. (We call this Stuck Blood)
🔴 Squeezing pain with clotty flow that can be as bad as labor pain. (This one requires all the kinds of turmeric)
🔴 Persistent cramping that gets better with warmth. We know how much you love your heating pad. (We call this one Cold in the Uterus)
🔴 Dull, lingering pain towards the end of your period and comes with fatigue and dizziness. (We'll call this Blood Deficiency)

When we switch from chasing pain to trying to hear its message, we help our whole body release the underlying pattern. Eastern and holistic medicine supports your whole system so you can move through your cycle with ease.

Doesn't that sound lovely?

When our internal systems are out of sync, they often signal their distress through pain or discomfort.

Whether it's constipation, painful periods, perimenopause symptoms, headaches, exhaustion, insomnia, irritability, depression, anxiety, weight gain, back pain, or neck and shoulder tension—each is a clear indicator that a system isn't functioning optimally. While we can't eliminate all external stressors from our lives (that's just part of living!), we can take steps to support our internal systems, helping them function more efficiently and reducing the daily load.

One effective way to establish regularity within our internal systems is by setting rhythms in our daily, weekly, and monthly routines:

🌙 Establish a consistent bedtime and wake-up time to regulate your sleep cycle.
🌙 Opt for regular meal times to help your body manage blood sugar levels effectively.
🌙 Commit to exercise regularly throughout the week.
🌙 Dedicate time to mindfulness each day.

We're not advocating a dull, overly regimented life but one in which the systems flow in an orderly fashion.

Within structure lies freedom—a sense of security in knowing that your systems are working to keep you healthy. Regular acupuncture treatments can contribute significantly to establishing optimal health flow for you and your body. This approach addresses symptoms while supporting the entire system, leading to improvements in every aspect of your well-being.

You Might Be Sabotaging Your Fertility (Without Even Realizing It)

We work with so many thoughtful, proactive women who’ve done *everything right*—but are still stuck, overwhelmed, and unsure of what to do next in their fertility journey. If that sounds familiar, know this: it’s not your fault, and you’re not alone.

Here are five patterns we often help our clients gently unwind:

1️⃣ Doing all the things (and exhausting yourself in the process).

It’s easy to fall into the trap of trying every supplement, protocol, or trending diet. But fertility isn’t about doing more—it’s about balance. When we slow down and get clear on what your body actually needs, things start to shift.

2️⃣ Seeing fertility as only a medical issue

Yes, your labs matter. But fertility is so much more than numbers on a page. It reflects your overall vitality—how well your body is nourished, how resilient your nervous system is, and how safe your body feels to conceive.

3️⃣ Not understanding your body's uniqueness

Your friend’s IVF timeline, that influencer’s supplement stack… none of that tells the story of *your* body. And your body’s story deserves to be honored with care that’s just as unique.

4️⃣ Searching for a single solution to “fix” the problem.

Fertility challenges are not failures. They’re your body’s way of asking for support. Healing is rarely linear—and never one-size-fits-all. It’s not about fixing what’s broken; it’s about creating the right conditions for your body to thrive.

5️⃣ Carrying it all alone.

Let’s say this louder: fertility is not solely a woman’s responsibility. Male fertility matters just as much, and emotional support is essential. You were never meant to do this by yourself.

✨ If this resonates, know there’s a gentler, more holistic path forward. At Four Flowers Wellness, we support the whole you—body, mind, and spirit—with acupuncture, herbal medicine, and individualized care that meets you where you are.

Reframing Meditation: What If You’re Not Doing It Wrong?

If the idea of meditating makes you feel more stressed, you’re not alone.

Many women I work with say they’ve “failed” at meditation because they couldn’t stop their thoughts or quiet their minds. But there's a reason we call it meditation "practice".

🧘‍♀️ Meditation isn’t about stopping your thoughts.
🧘‍♀️ It’s about creating the internal conditions that help your nervous system shift into a more calm, balanced state.

When you sit or lie down and bring your attention to your breath—or to the sensations in your body—you’re helping your brain shift from a high-alert Beta state into slower Alpha and Theta brainwave patterns.

These are the brainwave states that may promote the release of:
✨ Serotonin — your natural mood stabilizer
✨ GABA — calming and anxiety-reducing
✨ Endorphins — your body’s natural pain relievers
✨ Growth hormone — which supports repair and regeneration

You don’t have to clear your mind or reach some mystical state of stillness. Just 10–13 minutes of practice each day can help your body feel safer—and your stress response begin to recalibrate.

Over time, your baseline state of stress can shift. Not because you’ve learned to “do meditation right,” but because you’re regularly giving your body what it needs to unwind, reset, and feel supported.

Your presence is more powerful than perfection.

💛 Double tap if this makes meditation feel more doable for you.

Holistic Care for Body and Mind

Four Flowers Wellness is an East Asian Medicine healthcare practice located in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago. I provide individually tailored treatments including acupuncture, herbal medicine, shiatsu massage, Eastern nutrition and lifestyle advice. I work closely with each client to fine-tune each session to effectively address their unique body, mind, and condition and allow us to get to the root of health. By restoring health from the deepest root out to the highest branch, my clients get authentic and lasting relief from symptoms and a profound sense of wellbeing.

My Story

My story with Eastern Medicine begins in my late teens. I started to struggle with confusing health symptoms: fatigue, depression, horrible menstrual cramps, irregular period, digestive trouble and acne. I went from doctor to doctor, not getting any answers or help.

At 23, I finally got a diagnosis: PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), a hormonal imbalance that affects menstruation and fertility, but also causes an array of other symptoms. I was told that I would never conceive a child naturally, that I’d be on medication for the rest of my life, and that there was little that could be done to manage my symptoms. I was devastated. But I finally had an answer and wasn’t about to resign myself to fate.
