With Halloween approaching in a few weeks, the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is reminding everyone that costume cont t lenses without a prescription can lead to serious eye infections or permanent vision loss. A poorly fitted contact lens can scrape the cornea which makes the eye more vulnerable to infection causing bacteria and viruses. Therefore, it is important to see an eye care professional to get a prescription for costume contact lenses.

Congratulations to Dr. William Mieler for being elected the next President of the American Ophthalmological Society (AOS)! This prestigious honor reflects his outstanding leadership, dedication to advancing eye care, and lifelong commitment to the field of ophthalmology. We’re proud to celebrate this incredible milestone!

The AOS is a medical society of ophthalmologists and the second oldest specialty medical society in the United States. Dr. Mieler has served as a member of the AOS Council (2018-23), the Chair of the Council (2022-23), and now as President (2025-26).
