Research in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences contributes to a greater understanding of the visual process and the causes of vision loss.

For more than 150 years, we have provided our patients with the highest standards of excellence in innovative eye care and eye research. In addition, we are teaching the next generation of ophthalmologic specialists.

Congratulations to Elmira Jalilian, PhD, MSc, for being selected to participate in the prestigious ARVO Women's Leadership Development Program (WLDP) for the 2026-2027 class. The WLDP is an intensive, year-long commitment dedicated to identifying and developing the next generation of women leaders in the eye and vision research community through mentorship, strategic positioning, and essential management training. Elmira's selection reflects her strong contributions to our work at UIC and her growing leadership role in vision science.

We are thrilled to congratulate William Chadwick, DO for being named the 2025-2026 Richard B. Warnecke, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow ! Under the mentorship of Michael Heiferman, MD, MBA, Chadwick joined a project that studies disparities in access to uveal melanoma care. As the Warnecke Fellow, he will receive $15,000 to advance his training and continue on a research project, with a goal of developing a more accurate and equitable method to predict outcomes in uveal melanoma (UM), a rare but often fatal eye cancer in adults.

With Halloween approaching in a few weeks, the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is reminding everyone that costume cont t lenses without a prescription can lead to serious eye infections or permanent vision loss. A poorly fitted contact lens can scrape the cornea which makes the eye more vulnerable to infection causing bacteria and viruses. Therefore, it is important to see an eye care professional to get a prescription for costume contact lenses.
