Glaucoma remains the leading threat to vision health, especially for African Americans. According to the National Eye Institution (NEI), Black patients have been found to be six times more at risk of vision loss than white patients.

It’s Women’s History Month and this year we are celebrating and uplifting the lives of pioneers in medicine and health care!
Today, we are looking at the groundbreaking work of Dr. Rebecca Crumpler, the first Black woman in the United States to earn an MD. Her work as a physician did more than just break racial and gender barriers in medicine; it also paved the way for generations of doctors and medical professionals.
Dr. Crumpler’s experiences and insights were documented in her book, A Book of Medical Discourses in Two Parts. This medical resource shed light on maternal health care, child health, diseases and nutrition. The knowledge Dr. Crumpler shared was revolutionary and introduced new safety measures when treating patients.

Our final highlight for Black History Month is Ruth Simmons. She is a trailblazing academic leader whose career is defined by becoming the first Black president of an Ivy League institution while leading Brown University with a vision rooted in equity and accountability.
Through initiatives like a landmark $1.4 billion fundraising campaign and the creation of Brown’s Steering Committee on slavery and justice, Ruth Simmons set a national standard for institutional reflection and change. She has undoubtedly left a legacy that continues to inspire progress in education and beyond.

He is a visionary electrical engineer and computer graphics pioneer whose groundbreaking work at Silicon Graphics helped bring early 3D graphics to life in iconic films like Jurassic Park and Terminator 2, while also shaping technologies used in gaming, engineering and biotechnology.
As a co-creator of the Geometry Engine, Marc Regis Hannah leaves a legacy that highlights how black excellence continues to drive innovation across science, technology, and culture.
