Adult Stuttering

Adult Stuttering A speech therapy practice made for adults who stutter. Say what you want, when you want. Ask about my free 30 minute consultation.

Personal brain surgery, TBI recovery insights. Based in Chicago, serving Illinois and Texas. Ana, a speech-language pathologist of 8 years, provides personalized support for adults who stutter. Ana grew passionate about this area after she recognized a gap in dignified care for adults who didn’t fit into the typical box of speech therapy target populations. This inspired her to establish Adult Stuttering, in 2021. In late 2022, Ana faced a life-altering challenge with the sudden diagnosis of a brain tumor, leading to a profound shift in her perspective. A survivor of brain surgery, her recovery journey is uniquely shaped by her expertise in cognitive functioning as a speech therapist. This personal “extended stay” in neurodiversity has significantly influenced her approach to treating clients, ranging from children with various communication needs to her specialized focus on adults who stutter. Ana studied communication sciences and disorders at the University of Texas where she believes her passion for stuttering support was first sparked. She assisted in research in the Developmental Stuttering Lab. She then received her master’s degree at UT Dallas. Beyond her professional endeavors, Ana finds joy in pilates, classic books and exploring Chicago’s various restaurants. She is often in Texas visiting her family and enjoying Texas queso. Ana is certified by the American Speech and Hearing Association, is a Spero Ally of Stuttering, is partnered with SPACE and is a native Spanish speaker. Ana is currently strengthening her knowledge in the areas of executive functioning and cognitive rehab. In the future, she is looking forward to using her combined professional and personal experience to provide support for traumatic brain injury survivors and guidance for their loved ones.

The ♥️ Safe Spaces of Stuttering ♥️ were created for a reason. This is a bit of an IYKYK sitch.

long story short, exploring is very different from exposing. Why hurl yourself through the fear fire when you can take a gentle and kind route.

Stop anticipating. ♥️

Many people who stutter spend conversations racing ahead in their mind to find the perfect replacement or the perfect roundabout way to share a message.. all so they don’t stutter.

This can’t be fun. Honestly, it sounds exhausting. Not only is it exhausting but it also makes your message less effective.

There is less connection, and overall it’s less authentic.

How cool would it be to JUST TALK. No planning. Just what you want to say. Your actual personality.

It’s okay if you’re not there yet. I ask that you be really nice to yourself, everyone is on their own journey on their own time.

If you’d like a little nudge comment INFO and I’ll be in touch. ♥️

A airlines flight attendant said this to one of my clients when they self disclosed apologetically on a flight.

What’s the number one rule of self disclose?

NO APOLOGIZING!

Easier said than done for some of course! We love all forms of growth and self advocacy.

This flight attendant immediately took the self disclosure, was a good listener for our protagonist and insisted they have nothing to apologize for.

At the end of the flight my client thanked the flight attendant and this is where she was more insistent, “You really need to quit apologizing!” Whoever she is WE LOVE HER! ♥️

“So anyways” ♥️

This client casually mentioned to a friend that he had a speech therapy session later that day. It was the first time ever sharing something like this with someone outside of his family. IT WAS A BIG DEAL!

But not a big deal to his friend. It was as casual to his friend as if my client had shared about a dentist visit.

His friend literally said, oh cool, “so anyways”… and they moved on. Not a big deal to friend but a huge weight off the shoulders of my client.

IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE HEAVY!

I say this with love… no one cares as much as you do about stuttering! If you are covert (constantly hiding the fact that you stutter) I promise there is another way.

He’s not alone many people who stutter are covert stutterers. I’ve met people who hide their stutter so well that even their significant others do not know.

However… this comes at a cost. The cost of authenticity, spontaneity, and the cost of truly CONNECTING with others.

It can be very difficult to leave the realm of covert stuttering. It does take bravery and a lot of self work. If you’re not ready, it’s okay. It’s always okay to not be ready.

If you’re not ready to leave covert stuttering but know that something has to change, I’ve made something for you. Comment CLARITY and I’ll dm you the link.

If you’ve read this far, thank you. If you’ve read this far, know that your voice matters and we do want to hear you talk. ♥️

I say this with love♥️ STOP PANIC PLANNING!

Using only the words you think will be fluent ruins your message, stresses you out, and quite frankly… your audience is less likely to feel connected. AND GUESS WHAT OUR BRAIN DOESNT TRULY MULTITASK. So, you’re not feeling as connected either.

Hungry more answers? Finally, relief in understanding experiences from the past. ♥️ An explanation of why your body feels the way it does. No myths, no quick fixes. Just answers, from a trusted source.

In a perfect world, everyone would have access to healthy stuttering therapy. Actually in a perfect world, stuttering wouldn’t be stigmatized at all.

To help heal this chasm in access, I think if we can offer reliable, research based information. ANSWERS that provide relief, validation, CLARITY.

AND when ready, people find access to community…. Then I think we’re making a difference.

If you’re ready for clarity, I’ve made something for you. A self paced, quick course that fits into your busy life. Comment CLARITY and I’ll dm you the link.

CHICAGO: The first 2026 Green Social is ready!

Green Social (No. 21)

Chicago adults who stutter, come join us in a space where stuttering isn’t a big deal.

This is an occasion where you get to show up and meet other people who stutter or clutter. THIS IS NOT A SUPPORT GROUP. You don’t have to talk about stuttering. (A lot like Fight Club)

Except, unlike fight club, you can talk about it if you want. Also, unlike Fight Club there is no fighting. Obviously.

This is fully informal, this doesn’t run like a meeting. This runs like a happy hour (purchase of drinks or coffee is available but fully optional). Come and hang out with other similarly aged adults who get it. Stuttering is a big part of your life but it’s not all of you. You’re multifaceted, you’re cool.

You can invite someone to accompany you or you can come by yourself!

Join the email list for details! Comment GREEN and I’ll send you the link!

You are wanted here and this event was truly created specifically for YOU.

A quick note, if stuttering is something that you’re having a hard time with, and seeing these emails/posts causes anxiety or stress, please know that it is okay if you’re not ready. Sometimes we have to let our brain’s and bodies get accustomed to the idea of an experience. Maybe next time, or maybe by February you’ll be ready!

Hot take on purposeful stuttering …. You’re likely doing it wrong! I say this with love. ♥️

I don’t want my clients to PUSH through something terrifying or traumatizing. THATS NOT FUN! AND YOU CANT CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE! What I do want is for my clients to get to know stuttering. Explore it, play with it if you will. Play can only happen when we feel truly safe. ♥️

In healthy stuttering therapy, fluency is NEVER the goal. Instead we see updated information, less negative rumination, validation and answers never had before!

BUT. Something I’ve noticed…. Not everyone is ready. And that’s okay. Every person and every experience is different. While you slowly work towards feeling ready, I have something for you.

comment INFO and I’ll add you to my list of people who will have early access to my Understanding Stuttering course! Open for presale now!

What if I told you that “practicing” fluency is… terrible advice and honestly pointless. There are reasons for it! Stuttering is variable by nature, spontaneous, much like life. And let’s not forget the adaptation effect. Hungry more answers? Finally, relief in understanding experiences from the past. ♥️ An explanation of why your body feels the way it does. No myths, no quick fixes. Just answers, from a trusted source.
