Today is the Winter Solstice!

Day 1 - Greet the sun

Sunlight literally helps set our metabolism and circadian rhythm for the day, activating hunger hormones and prepping for the appropriate timing of melatonin for the end of the day.

Spending time outside while the sun is still low in the sky nourishes our energy (qi)!

Walk around the block, do a light movement sequence, or simply listen to the quiet sounds of nature in daylight. Wear warm clothes. Have a warm water or herbal tea. Continue to nourish your yin fluids with soups & rest.

Yin has met its fullness. Now we embrace the pivot toward increasing yang energy as sunrises & sunsets gradually become farther apart

Nourish yin, embrace yang

Tomorrow is the Winter Solstice!

Day 2 - Rest more

Winter is nature's time to rest. Some animals hibernate, the trees nourish their roots, even the sun has less presence. We are part of nature too.

This is the most yin time of year. Hydrating, stretching, and soothing activities all nourish yin, but the best thing for our yin is actually REST
Go to bed earlier. Wake up later. Relax during the day when you can. Work less. Exercise lighter. Allow yourself the grace to slow down and rest like the trees & the animals.

Nourish your yin

Tomorrow we have the longest night.

We are almost at the Solstice!

Day 3 - Drink ginger tea

Ginger warms and supports digestion. It helps transform heavy meals, and has antibacterial qualities that help protect us from contaminated food.

Ginger can be used in its fresh or dried forms for tea. Dried ginger found in tea bags is stronger and spicier. Slicing up fresh ginger and boiling it in hot water is milder & can be tailored to the potency you prefer.

Drink ginger tea to improve digestion & support your qi this Winter.

Yesterday was day 4 on our countdown...

Day 4 - Stretch daily

In the Winter, it is easy to become stiff. Our muscles contract to protect us from the cold. This constricts the flow of blood & fluids through the muscles which can lead to pain & stiffness.

Stretching opens the muscles. It keeps us limber and supple. Yoga & other stretching techniques protect our joints and muscles from becoming brittle like the frozen ground.

Stretch more this season!

Nourish your yin.

Today....day 5 of our countdown to the Winter Solstice!

Day 5 - Avoid excess sweating

Sweating is our body's way of cooling us down when we get overheated. In the Summer, this is necessary. But in the Winter, we want to preserve our internal warmth.

Any heavy exercise, while great for overall health, if it makes us drip with sweat, it will drain the fluid of our qi, depleting our internal heat.

Swap those heavy workouts for stretching, walking, yoga or tai chi. Keep moving, just don't get too sweaty.

Tuesday got away from me! You will get 2 tips today!

Day 6 - Use warm spices

Winter is teeming with comforting, warming spices - cinnamon, ginger, clove, nutmeg, turmeric, etc.

Spices like these help transform our food, keep our digestion moving, and build heat from the inside.

Be cautious about heating spices that are drying, however. Anything that makes us sweat, like cayenne or jalapeƱo, will cool overall and burn up our yin fluids.

We want spices that provide nourishing warmth.

Only a week left till the Solstice!

Day 7 - Embrace soup season

Spleen qi is easily overwhelmed in Winter, partly due to warming us, and partly from the rich foods that are prevalent during the holiday season.

Soup softens all of that.
Food is already partially broken down.
Broth is warm and nourishing.
Bone broth, in particular, builds yin fluids (think collagen & marrow) and helps prevent dryness and depletion.

Nurture the entire body wirh soup this season

Nourish your yin.

Winter Solstice is 8 days away!

Day 8 - Eat warm food

The spleen qi has to warm up everything we consume before it can be transformed into usable nutrients.

In Winter, this task, combined with keeping us warm overall, can be challenging. Eat mostly cooked and warm foods to help digestion, and prevent fatigue, bloating, nausea and loose stools.

Trade the cold smoothies & yogurt, salads & raw veggies for soups, stews and rice meals this time of year.

Protect your yang.

The Winter Solstice is 9 days away!

Day 9 - Begin with warm water

Upon waking, our spleen qi, the energy that our digestive system relies on, is at its coldest. It needs coaxing to wake up, especially in the Winter.

Warm water calmly wakes the spleen qi, and gently starts the transformative functions for the day.

If you are not hungry soon after waking, try adding lemon juice to your warm water. Lemon activates the digestive juices and helps create appropriate hunger cues.

If you are dry because of the dryer Winter air, add goji berries to your warm water. Let them soak, drink the water, but also eat the berries. Goji berries nourish fluids and help the body create moisture.

Beginning the day with this nurturing ritual helps regulate metabolism for the entire day, giving us more balanced energy and better timed hunger cues.

Nourish your yin.

Stay tuned every day until the Solstice for a new Winter TCM tip.

Winter Solstice is only 10 days away!

Day 10 - Cover the Low Back

Winter is the season governed by water, and the kidney system is prominent during this time. The physical kidneys reside in the low back. We need to protect the kidneys from the cold or they will become depleted, much like the battery in a cellphone exposed to the winter elements.

Wear clothes that cover the skin of the lumbar area to keep your energy strong all day.

Protect your yang.
