This year's festival promises an impressive lineup with 51 feature films and 31 shorts, set to run from April 16 to April 27, 2026, at the Landmark Century Centre Cinemas. The festival opens with the Chicago premiere of the dystopian film "It Would Be Night in Caracas" by Mariana Rondón and Marité Ugás. The closing night will feature the Ecuadorian comedy "The Dog, My Father and Us" by Pablo Arturo Suárez. Both films promise engaging post-screening Q&As with the filmmakers. Tickets for these special events include not only the film screenings but also a reception with food, drinks, and live music.

Opportunity for Artists:
/ Chicago Park District
Deadline to submit is April 13, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. CT.

Calling all artists interested in bringing to life a new Jean Baptiste Point DuSable statue to be unveiled at the forthcoming opening of the DuSable Park in 2027.

All artists are welcome, with priority given to Haitian artists or teams, particularly those with strong connections to the Chicago region.

DuSable Park is a 3.44-acre park located east of Lake Shore Drive at the confluence of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. After decades of remaining vacant land, the site is now in design for upcoming park development.

The park site is located upon an area of lake fill that was home to various industrial uses beginning in the late 1800s. The site was established as a park as part of the Chicago Dock and Canal Trust Planned Development, and in 1987 Mayor Harold Washington dedicated and named the site in honor of Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable, the first non-native American settler and founder of Chicago. In 1988, a quitclaim of 3.44 acres for DuSable Park was deeded to the Chicago Park District.

Per the Framework Plan, the Chicago Park District's goals in creating DuSable Park are to:
-Honor and celebrate Jean Baptiste Pointe Du Sable's contributions to Chicago and to educate the public accordingly.
- Recognize the unique confluence of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan by creating a passive, visible and accessible park.
- Attract the local community, citywide residents, and tourists to the park.
- Create a park design that has evolved from the input of the Chicago Park District and the DuSable Park Steering Committee.
- Incorporate art and storytelling into the park that celebrates the life and legacy of DuSable

DEADLINE REMINDER!
The Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards
Illinois Humanities /

The 2026 Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards are accepting submissions now until Friday, May 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Illinois students in grades K to 12 can submit a poem via our online portal. Winners will be announced in August.

Celebrate the legacy of Gwendolyn Brooks and the creativity of K-12 writers in Illinois. These annual awards are a platform for the next generation of poets to share their voices and develop their craft.

The Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards honor the legacy of Illinois’ own Gwendolyn Brooks: renowned poet, author, and the first Black Pulitzer Prize winner. Each and every one of the young poets who take part in this competition is a part of that legacy. Brooks summed up the contest best in a note in 1977: “All the children who entered the contest are winners… They worked hard. They created. And that is what is important.”

Save the date for our 10th anniversary awards ceremony on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts.
