Communication is key when it comes to engaging in relationships. For most of us, we didn’t take a life class that tells us the best way to share. We didn’t learn quality interactions and how to have intimacy with the people around us. One of my favorite relationship tips is the concept and difference between “Support” and “Shift” responses.

Sociologist Charles Derber crafted this concept in an effort to address the broader term “Conversational Narcissism.” The notion of conversational narcissism is exactly like what it sounds like. It is the pattern that some people have of turning the subject of every conversation back to themselves. This skill is designed to combat this tendency and teach how to avoid conversational narcissism.

Historically taking a smoking break was actually a great coping mechanism when it came to stress. It removes the person from a stressful environment, typically making them go outside, and get away from anyone or anything else contributing to stress. You then took deep breaths in and long breaths out. If it was cold outside, that could also calm the nerves and bring down elevated moods.

Then of course the effects of ni****ne were believed to relieve anxiety and tension and provide a buzz. Then the person is briefly refreshed and able to cope with whatever they return to. On the surface, it is a great way to escape a stressful moment by taking a break. The only unhealthy aspect is the inhaling of ni****ne and not only because it’s linked to cancer. We don’t immediately assume that ni****ne is a depressant.

It is difficult to unravel the truth about ni****ne and smoking. This article answeres, is ni****ne truly a depressant?

Caffeine and other caffeinated beverages can increase stress due to the way it affects the body. For people with high stress or anxiety, caffeine can sometimes can take the useful, stimulating aspects of caffeine and tip the balance towards more anxiety.

Highlights from our new blog post:

☕️ Caffeine blocks the neurotransmitter that causes feelings of calmness and sleepiness, leading to a more active nervous system
☕️ Caffeine can temporarily raise cortisol levels, sometimes leading to a heightened stress response if someone is under stress
☕️ Some people may not experience negative effects from coffee, while others are more sensitive
☕️ Understanding the relationship between anxiety, lifestyle factors (like sleep and workload), and caffeine use can be a helpful part of taking care of mental health overall

elcome back to our journey in relationship tolerance. In my last post on the role of tolerance in relationships: “knowing when”, I talked about what tolerance is and why it’s crucial for our romantic relationships. In this post, I’ll be talking about knowing how we actually practice tolerance in a relationship. This can be demonstrated in a four-part process:

1. Picking the Behaviors to Practice On

2. Identify and Neutrally Name the Behavior

3. Urge Surf the Distress

4. Distract

Knowing how is just as important as knowing when when looking at the role of tolerance in relationships.

Learn more in our Tolerance in Relationships Part 2 blog post:

The next step in understanding the role of Tolerance in Relationships is “Knowing How” to react and tolerate these behaviors.
