The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is initiating a review of the science on fluoride in drinking water. The ADA is urging review to follow rigorous, peer-reviewed scientific standards in its fluoride assessment plan. The ADA submitted written comments to the EPA in June 2025 and is planning to submit additional information this year to reinforce the position that community fluoridated drinking water remains a safe and effective public health measure.

: The Indian Health Service announced it will stop using dental amalgam in its facilities by 2027. The ADA continues to support the use of dental amalgam based on a dentist’s clinical judgment and current scientific evidence that it is a safe, durable and affordable material to treat cavities.

Following the Indian Health Service’s announcement, dentists may receive questions from patients about amalgam. The ADA has prepared a resource to help dentists talk to their patients about this topic, available at ADA.org/IndianHealthServices.

This week, Erika Benavides, D.D.S., Ph.D. gives “Dental Sound Bites™” listeners an overview of the new radiography recommendations developed by an expert panel established by the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs and endorsed by the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR).

This evidence-informed guidance confirms the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle recognized in both dentistry and medicine to minimize exposure over a patient’s lifetime and only order X-rays when clinically necessary. Today, the American Dental Association Foundation (ADAF) officially kicks off Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) 2026 events at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry marking 24 years of transforming children’s lives through this access to oral health care initiative.
GKAS has helped improve the oral health of more than 10.2 million children across the U.S. since 2023. In the year ahead, GKAS plans to mobilize 23,000 dental volunteers across 1,200 events to serve an estimated 325,000 children through free oral health education, dental screenings, cleanings, and preventive and/or restorative services. The program also supports follow-up care and helping families find dental homes.
Thank you to all dentist and dental team volunteers and national program sponsors Henry Schein, Inc. and Colgate!
