There's so much we can learn from taking pitches, like this bunt take from pro player Sammy Marshall, for example:
1) Notice how her feet continue moving toward the pitcher even when she decides not to bunt this pitch. Too often we see young athletes stop their feet at contact, especially on bunts.
2) Notice how her barrel comes out BEFORE her crossover step. This is key in deadening bunts. Feet moving toward pitch + late barrel = rocket bunt.
3) Notice how tight her arms are to her chest/core. Too often we see young athletes move toward the ball with their arms... remember, your feet are already taking you toward the pitch!
Are your slappers stabbing at bunts? Chances are 1) their feet are stopping first so their arms have to make up for the lack of leg work, 2) they're early and the ball hasn't gotten to them yet or 3) they are eager just don't want to miss.
Incorporate bunting into your next practice, please!
