Be The Momentum

Be The Momentum Empowering slappers to be catalysts for game-changing moments. By Emily Allard and Kristin Scharkey. We believe in slappers. We believe speed kills.

We believe setting the table is as important as clearing the bases. And we believe slappers hold a unique ability to influence the momentum of our game. Be The Momentum is a slapping clinic for softball players ages 8-18 who want to hone their skills as triple threats. We teach slapping and bunting fundamentals, as well as situational slapping in order to expand the toolboxes of young slappers. Our focus is on preparing slappers to set the tone each inning by empowering them to see their game-changing potential and value as table-setters.

For the slappers competing in national tournaments this weekend remember, the pressure is on THEM, not you.
Trust your speed and your ability to put the ball in play. The rest will take care of itself.

Here’s a sequence of a promising young slapper with an important adjustment to note: Wherever her hips and chest lead, her hands and barrel will follow. Which means as her hips and chest rotate off the ball, her hands follow suit. Notice how far her step after her crossover lands away from the cone... use visuals with your slappers to keep them straight toward the pitcher with all of their reps.

There's so much we can learn from taking pitches, like this bunt take from pro player Sammy Marshall, for example:
1) Notice how her feet continue moving toward the pitcher even when she decides not to bunt this pitch. Too often we see young athletes stop their feet at contact, especially on bunts.
2) Notice how her barrel comes out BEFORE her crossover step. This is key in deadening bunts. Feet moving toward pitch + late barrel = rocket bunt.
3) Notice how tight her arms are to her chest/core. Too often we see young athletes move toward the ball with their arms... remember, your feet are already taking you toward the pitch!

Are your slappers stabbing at bunts? Chances are 1) their feet are stopping first so their arms have to make up for the lack of leg work, 2) they're early and the ball hasn't gotten to them yet or 3) they are eager just don't want to miss.

Incorporate bunting into your next practice, please!

When practicing off a tee it's so important to 1) get comfortable switching back and forth between tools and 2) understand your contact points.
Too often we see slappers try and guide the ball, let your contact point help with placement!

Help us wish a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! If you’ve ever been to a clinic, you know she’s the inspiration, the energy and the MOMENTUM we try to embody for each and every slapper.

Your footwork is your foundation! It is so important to teach your young slappers to stay STRAIGHT toward the pitcher. Sometimes an obstacle course is the way to go😏

DRILL ALERT: One slapper starts on her stomach, the other behind her in a good base-running position. The goal is to get into your first step as quickly as possible!

We start with our hands by our ear because a slapper’s priority is to get on top. Our hands stay there during our crossover.

Check list: Are your toes pointed toward the shortstop? Is your back elbow parallel to the ground? Are your hands by your ear?

Pulling off the ball too soon? Running toward first too soon? Opening up too soon? This one’s for you! One of our favorite drills to help slappers keep their hips closed on the shortstop! Get on the net!

We’ll see some of you tomorrow in Oak Creek, WI!
