Our Story

The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) is the only professional nursing association dedicated to the practice of medical-surgical nursing. AMSN promotes excellence in medical-surgical nursing, the largest nursing specialty in the world. AMSN has 13,000 members who are devoted to improving their practice and connecting within the med-surg community.

In addition to professional membership, AMSN offers educational opportunities such as webinars and opportunities of online learning for CE hours, a podcast called Med-Surg Moments - The AMSN Podcast, publications such as Med-Surg Nursing Journal and MedSurg Matters!, awards, grants, and scholarships. Registered nurses can also obtain our medical-surgical nursing certification – Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN®) – which is facilitated by our Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB). Currently, over 37,000 nurses hold this certification. Finally, we extend the opportunity to medical-surgical nursing units around the globe to apply on a rolling basis for our prestigious AMSN PRISM Award®, which recognizes excellence in the specialty of medical-surgical nursing.
