Mark Reese is one of the most foremost acupuncturists in Chicago and has been treating the health concerns of patients with acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for almost twenty years. After earning degrees in microbiology and biochemistry, followed by work in the cancer research field, he realized that his true calling lay in working to heal people in a more direct fashion. From the lab he moved into creating several grassroots health initiatives where, among many other projects, he created three alternative health clinics for people living with HIV/AIDS at Cook County Hospital, at a shelter for homeless people, and at an agency which served Latinos living with HIV/AIDS. In the process of working with alternative medical practitioners, Mark became excited by the power of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and eventually enrolled in and graduated from the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine. Mark created and practices at the Northside Holistic Center in Chicago. He has also been on the faculty of the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, has taught at the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine and has served on the Board of Directors for the Illinois Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ILAAOM). Synthesizing past skills with almost two decades of clinical experience has led to Mark being called, "the acupuncturists' acupuncturist" – many practitioners will refer their most challenging cases to the Northside Holistic Center to be seen by him.

All,

In struggling to figure out what I can do to help with the current, rightful protests here in Chicago, I was told about an amazing organization called the Chicago Bond Fund by a patient of mine.

You see, people who are arrested at protests are arbitrarily assigned a bond amount and the amount does not factor in their ability to pay. For example a poor person who is the sole bread winner in their family, might be assigned a bond of tens of thousands of dollars and are therefore unable to get out of prison until their trial, which can be months or even years later.

Contrast that with a person of financial means who is arrested and can afford to be out of prison that day. Injustice.

Today my clinic, The Northside Holistic Center, will give all revenue generated to the Chicago Bond Fund.

If you are interested, the link and their mission statement is below.

“The Chicago Community Bond Fund (CCBF) pays bond for people charged with crimes in Cook County, Illinois. Through a revolving fund, CCBF supports individuals whose communities cannot afford to pay the bonds themselves and who have been impacted by structural violence. Inability to pay bond results in higher rates of conviction, longer sentences, loss of housing and jobs, separation of families, and lost custody of children. By paying bond, CCBF restores the presumption of innocence before trial and enables recipients to remain free while fighting their cases. CCBF also engages in public education about the role of bond in the criminal legal system and advocates for the abolition of money bond. CCBF is committed to long-term relationship building and organizing with people most directly impacted by criminalization and policing.“

The Chicago Community Bond Fund is working to end all forms of pre-trial detention in Illinois.

Some thoughts on coronavirus and Chinese medicine, along with a few of the early Chinese studies on using acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to both prevent and treat the virus.

I originally wrote this article back in the early part of the 21st century, when SARS and then MERS were major concerns worldwide, but it bears republishing during this worrisome new era of Covid-19, the new strain of coronavirus. At that time, as now, people were justifiably worried for their hea

Acupuncture treats urinary incontinence extremely well and I’ve just written a short blog post on this subject.

Of all of the many indignities which the human body may suffer through, bladder incontinence ranks quite high on the list. Incontinence may occur for a wide variety of reasons: age or youthful bed wetting; neurological issues such as MS, or Parkinson’s; trauma; and after pregnancy. Happily, acu
