The year was 1935 when Tom Gibbons’ father opened the first Gibbons Funeral Home on the west side of Chicago. Today there are three Gibbons Funeral Homes, all family owned and operated. The Elmhurst location was founded in 1960, and the firm on the northwest side of Chicago was established in 1973. The Gibbons family also owns and operates The Oaks Funeral Home in Itasca, founded in 1987.

Serving Those Who Served: Gibbons Family Funeral Home Ensures Veterans Receive Their Honors

Barbara Murphy's first thoughts upon the passing of her father, was his service to the nation. Mr. Murphy had been a Veteran for 50 years by the time he passed away at age 74. Like many veterans, he didn’t talk often about his service, but often shared how proud he was of serving his country. 'Once a Marine, always a Marine' was his mantra.

Unfortunately, many families are not aware of the benefits earned by their loved ones who served. Michael Gibbons of Gibbons Family Funeral Home in Chicago asked Barbara if her father had served. “Once Michael knew of my father's service in the Marine Corps, everything changed. He took care of everything, only asking us to bring in dad's discharge papers; his DD-214“

“It was a wonderful thing to see my father honored for his service. We were surprised and grateful to be fully informed of his Veteran benefits, all because Michael asked us”, Barbara said, adding ”There was an amazing moment during the service, where the Marines were folding the American Flag. From our perspective and vantage point, the flag simply hovered over my father. It took our breath away, and the moment became unforgettable.”The President of the United States and a grateful nation thanks you for your service Mr. Murphy." A grateful family knows what these benefits mean to Veterans and Families. A family of professional Funeral Directors ensure families receive all the benefits that are so unselfishly earned, and so richly deserve.

Veterans are entitled to a number of services including burial at no charge at a National Cemetery, one being Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
